Three different St. Lawrence University field hockey team members had goals in a high-scoring Sunday afternoon contest, but St. Lawrence fell 4-3 at the hands of visiting William Smith.
The loss drops the Saints conference record to 2-3, and their overall record to 5-8. They now occupy fourth place in the Liberty League standings, tied with RPI and Skidmore for that place. Five Liberty League teams qualify for the tournament.
William Smith came out of the gate strong, notching the game's first three goals. Ana Dios Vidal got the game's first goal, then Kristen Newman made it 2-0 Herons at 21:06. Just under two minutes later, Caroline Kogut made it 3-0.
St. Lawrence scored a big goal late in the first half, getting on the board before halftime. After a penalty corner,
Suzanne L'Hommedieu ripped a shot through traffic and beat William Smith netminder Baker Jeremiah. That sent the game into halftime with the score at 3-1.
Five minutes into the third quarter,
Hannah Gubbins made it a one-goal game on a scramble for the ball in front of the net. The first-year wacked home her second of the year to make it a game.
However, the teams would trade a goal a piece from there. Despite a late push from St. Lawrence, the Herons took the game 4-3.
St. Lawrence will now enter their final two conference games against Union on Friday, October 25, and Ithaca on Sunday, October 27. They need wins in those contests to keep pace with the competitive playoff picture at the conference level.
