Hustler Tallies Four Points, No. 7 Saints Shutout UVM 5-0

Abby Hustler tallied a goal and three assists, while four other Saints scored, as the seventh-ranked St. Lawrence University women's hocket team rebounded with a 5-0 shutout win over the University of Vermont on Saturday afternoon in Burlington, Vt.

After a scoreless first period of play, the Saints got off to a hot start outscoring the Catamounts 15-5 in the opening 20 minutes.

Anna Segedi broke the ice for the Saints, scoring 54 seconds into the second period. Aly McLeod forced a turnover at the Catamounts blue line and passed off to Abby Hustler. Hustler's shot was stopped by UVM goaltender Jane Gervais, but the rebound popped out to the stick of Segedi, who buried it for the 1-0 lead.

Just about five minutes later, McLeod added her second point of the night, as the puck was played off the boards, she beat Gervais glove side, making it 2-0.

Tori Verbeek scored the third goal of the second period on the power play, as she capitalized on a rebound on the doorstep off another initial shot from Hustler, which was deflected by McLeod.

After two periods, St. Lawrence led 3-0 and outshot Vermont 29-14.

Just about two minutes into the third period, Sarah Marchand made it 4-0, as she waited out Gervais and sent a high shot to the top right corner. Kennedy Wilson assisted on the play forcing a turnover in the neutral zone.

Hustler tacked on her fourth point of the night, scoring the final goal for the Saints at 3:02 of the third. Hustler forced a turnover, dished the puck off to Segedi, Segedi then left it off for Hustler, who went off the crossbar and in for the 5-0 final.

"We were able to get one in the net early in the second and it felt like things were falling in place after that.," said head coach Chris Wells. "A very similar effort from Friday, but different result. Emma was solid all weekend and Kass came in and made some nice stops in the third today."

Emma-Sofie Nordström stopped 16 shots for the Saints and shared time in goal with Kassidy Lawrence, who logged eight saves. Gervais finished with 33 saves for Vermont.

The Saints finished with a 38-24 advantage in shots on goal and went 1-for-3 on the power play with the goal from Verbeek, while Vermont went 0-for-3.

"Vermont is always a good test for us and this weekend gave us another look at what works for us and what we need to keep working on to be successful," Wells added. "It was good to see some players get some goals and some pucks bounce their way today."

With the win, St. Lawrence improved to 5-3-0 overall, while the Catamounts fell to 1-5-0.

The Saints will continue their three-week stretch on the road, as they travel to Rochester for a two-game series with the Tigers next weekend. Game times are scheduled for 3 p.m. on Friday and 1 p.m. on Saturday.
