For the second straight conference game, the St. Lawrence University field hockey team stretched the game to double overtime before taking a narrow loss. This time it was a 2-1 decision at the hands of No. 21 nationally ranked Rochester.
The Saints scored first in the contest before the Yellow Jackets responded with a goal in the fourth quarter to equalize. Host Rochester took the victory in overtime.
The Yellow Jackets began the game with an advantage on the attack, firing the game's first six shots at the net.
Cara Vredenburg was up for the task, however, and stopped them all. Rochester continued to apply pressure before the end of the first half but the Saints' keeper kept the game scoreless.
St. Lawrence then struck first in the third quarter.
Maggie Spire had the ball on the left, and sent it across to Caroline Hamiton who notched her 10
th goal of the season to give the Scarlet and Brown a 1-0 lead.
That held until the final 15 minutes, when Rochester mustered up one last push to get on the board and tie the game. They launched eight shots toward goal and eight penalty corners in the final quarter, with Vredenburg stopping all shots until the Jackets tied the game with nine minutes remaining.
Rochester then took the victory in double overtime. The Saints have now played double overtime games in three of their last four games, amassing a 1-2 record in games that have gone beyond regulation.
St. Lawrence returns to action Sunday, October 20 when they welcome William Smith to Hall-Leet Stadium. They are set for a 2 p.m. start.
