Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Nordström Secures Shutout; No. 8 Saints Down No. 15 Mercyhurst, 3-0

Emma-Sofie Nordström recorded 18 saves for the shutout, while Taylor Lum, Melissa Jefferies and Hillary Sterling scored to power the No. 8 St. Lawrence University women's hockey team to a 3-0 win over No. 15 Mercyhurst on Friday afternoon at Appleton Arena.

With the win, the Saints improved to 3-2-0, while the Lakers fell to 1-4-0.

After a scoreless and evenly paced first period of play, the Lakers held a slight 8-7 edge in shots.

Lum broke the ice in the second period and put the Saints on the board with a 1-0 lead, as she deflected a pass from Claire Tyo past Mercyhurst netminder Jordan Mattison. Kennedy Wilson also assisted in the action.

After two periods of play, SLU held onto their 1-0 lead on the scoreboard and led 19-11 in shots.

At 8:57 of the second, Jefferies tacked on an insurance goal for the Scarlet and Brown, with an impossibly angled shot that slipped past Mattison for the 2-0 advantage. Anna Segedi tallied her 99th career point with the helper.

With 28.6 seconds left in the third frame, Hillary Sterling notched her first goal of the season and cleared half the ice with an empty netter, sealing the 3-0 win. Wilson added her second assist of the night on the play.

"Always good games vs. Mercyhurst," said head coach Chris Wells. "That second goal was big for us, as we had been pressing pretty good in the second period and couldn't get another on the board."

"Mercyhurst had some real good chances. One off the post, one we cleared off the line and Emma was very confident on the shots she faced," Wells added. "We were able to get everyone involved and everyone contributed to the win. It was nice to see Hill get one as she has been playing well."

Nordström recorded her 18 saves for her ninth career shutout, while Mattison finished with 21 for the Lakers.

St. Lawrence finished with a 24-18 shot advantage on the afternoon.

The two teams will meet back at Appleton for game two of the weekend series, Saturday, October 12 at 3 p.m.
