Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Segedi Nets Game-Winning 100th Point; No. 8 Saints Complete Weekend Sweep With 2-1 Win Over No. 15 Mercyhurst

Graduate captain Anna Segedi tallied her 100th career point and the game-winning goal to lift the eighth-ranked St. Lawrence University women's hockey team to a 2-1 win over No. 15 Mercyhurst on Saturday afternoon at Appleton Arena to complete the weekend sweep.

With the win, the Saints improved to 4-2-0, while Mercyhurst fell to 1-5-0.

Just 14 seconds into play, Mercyhurst's Thea Johansson turned the puck over on the St. Lawrence goal line and fed Vanessa Upson to give the Lakers the early lead.

After the first period of play, Mercyhurst led 1-0 on the scoreboard and 12-8 in shots on goal.

Tori Verbeek tied things up, scoring her first goal in Scarlet and Brown with 12:13 to play in the second. Claire Tyo picked off the puck in the neutral zone and gave it off to Verbeek, who flew down the left boards and went top shelf to beat Lakers' goaltender Magdalena Luggin to tie things up.

With the game tied 1-1 after the second period, St. Lawrence led 24-20 in shots on goal.

In dramatic fashion, Segedi netted the game-winning goal with 1:35 to play in the third period. Kristina Bahl intercepted a Lakers pass and sent the puck wide to Melissa Jefferies, Jefferies found Segedi in the slot and after a bobble back-and-forth with Mercyhurst's Makayla Javier, Segedi scored with the back-handed shot.

St. Lawrence finished with a 37-28 lead in shots.

"What a great way to enter the PJ Flanagan '80 Century Club for Anna," said head coach Chris Wells. "Her line had a pile of chances all day today and were rewarded with a very memorable one for the winner."

"Two years in a row we have had an exciting finish vs. Mercyhurst," Wells added. "They came out hard and had chances all game and it easily could have been 2-1 Mercyhurst instead of us. A very exciting up and down hockey game that kept the fans entertained. Both goalies were very good and a very clean hard fought two games for both teams."

Emma-Sofie Nordström stopped 27 of 28 shots in goal for the Saints, while Luggin finished with 35 for the Lakers. With no penalties in today's game, neither team would get a chance on the power play.

The Saints will hit the road for a two-game series with the University of Vermont next weekend. Puck drop is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Friday and 2 p.m. on Saturday.
