Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Ninth-Ranked Cornell Edges No. 10 St. Lawrence, 3-1

Anna Segedi scored her second power play goal of the weekend, but the ninth-ranked Cornell Big Red powered their way to a 3-1 win over the No. 10 St. Lawrence University women's hockey team on Saturday afternoon in Ithaca, N.Y.

Just four minutes into the first, Cornell struck first as Grace Dwyer skated into the slot and beat Emma-Sofie Nordström top shelf for the early 1-0 lead.

Despite the lead on the scoreboard, the Saints produced some solid opportunities in the first and held a 13-4 advantage in shots on goal.

The Big Red scored their second of the game with a transition play, as Lily Delianedis corralled the puck in the neutral zone, passed off to Izzy Daniel and the final tip from Karel Prefontaine for the 2-0 lead at 11:56.

Much like Friday night, Segedi was able to cut into the lead once again, as she capitalized on a tic-tac-toe play and scored on the power play at 14:26. Julia Gosling and Mae Batherson assisted on the play.

The Scarlet and Brown continued to hold the edge in shots on goal with a 20-11 advantage through two periods.

St. Lawrence sustained heavy pressure and held Cornell in their defensive zone for the majority of the third, but were unable to cash in on their opportunities.

Head coach Chris Wells pulled Nordström for the extra attacker with 2:02 to play in the third, but with 44.3 seconds on the clock, Georgia Schiff sent the puck down ice for the empty-net tally and the 3-1 win.

"It was a tough way to finish off the weekend," said Wells. "We played a strong game and had solid efforts to get the win, but we couldn't get on top on the scoreboard. Cornell capitalized on a couple line rushes and blocked a lot of shots to secure the win. We can take some good out of the weekend as we head into the home stretch of the schedule."

Nordström finished with 14 saves for St. Lawrence, while Annelies Bergmann made 28 for Cornell.

St. Lawrence finished with a 55-42 shot advantage, including 29-17 in shots on goal. The Saints were the only team to capitalize on the power play, going 1-for-4.

With the loss, SLU fell to 13-8-0 on the season and 7-3-0 in league play, while Cornell improved to 13-3-1 and 8-2-0.

"We have now seen everyone in the league at least once and know what is in front of us," Wells added. "Friday can't come soon enough to get back up on the horse and play again!"

The Saints will return to Appleton Arena to host Union and RPI on January 12 and 13, respectively.
