Sophomore forward
Tyler Cristall scored the game-tying goal in a third period that saw a 21-6 shot advantage for the Saints as the St. Lawrence University men's hockey team battled to a 1-1 tie with No. 18 RIT in Rochester, N.Y.
St. Lawrence moved to 5-11-2 on the year, while RIT went to 13-6-1.
The first period was a see-saw battle that saw both teams generate great looks despite a 20-9 edge in shots for the Tigers.
Ben Kraws, who stopped 37 shots in last night's game, made 20 in the first period including a pair of great chances in the game's first three minutes. The Scarlet and Brown would counter punch with a shot in the slot from
Max Dorrington followed by shots from Tomáš Mazura and
Felikss Gavars that were all stopped by Tommy Scarfone.
Kraws would stop a breakaway at the 14:20 mark of the period that once again turned into offense with
Greg Lapointe getting a pair of fantastic looks that were turned aside to keep the game even after 20 minutes.
The second period would start with 1:51 of penalty kill time for the Saints, which they killed, in what would become a period of special teams.
Gunnar Thoreson found himself with space after the kill but his shot was snared by Scarfone.
RIT would break the scoring 4:12 into the period when a Gustav Blom outlet pass sprung a 2-on-1 that Elijah Gonsalves would cash in for the 1-0 lead.
St. Lawrence would get three power play chances following the goal and had heavy pressure. Mazura, Gavars,
Justin Paul, and Lapointe all had notable chances on the man advantages but were unable to tie up the game.
In what was the fifth penalty of the period, RIT would go on the power play late in the period, but Kraws and the penalty kill unit stood tall.
It would take just 54 seconds of elapsed time in the third before the Scarlet and Brown would tie up the game. The Tigers were breaking out of their zone when Mazura forced a bad turnover deep in RIT territory. The puck came out to Gavars, whose shot was stopped but the rebound came out to Cristall, who danced Scarfone and beat the goaltender to tie the game at 1-1.
The goal would help jumpstart the Saints, who outshot the Tigers 21-6 in the period. Lapointe, who was all over the net, had an open look but saw his shot miss the target in search of the tie breaking goal.
Gavars, Paul, and Dorrington all got great attempts on the frame, but the game would go to overtime at 1-1.
In the five-minute overtime,
Cameron Buhl would be afforded the best chance for either team as he was out on a 2-on-1 with Cristall. The sophomore forward made a nifty pass to Buhl, whose shot narrowly missed the net.
The time would hit zero and the two teams would go to a tie officially. Despite the tie, the teams played a shootout that RIT would win in the third round with a goal.
Kraws finished the game with 42 saves bringing his weekend total to 79. Scarfone was peppered in the RIT net making a career-high 46 saves in the tie.
St. Lawrence would hold a 47-43 shot advantage and would go 0-for-4 on the power play, while going 2-for-2 on the kill.
With non-conference play in the rearview, the Saints will head into the ECAC home stretch starting next weekend when the team travels to RPI on Friday night before taking on Union on Saturday.
