First-year forward
Elizabeth Flynn's double-double kept the score tight, but the St. Lawrence University women's basketball team fell 68-51 at the hands of Vassar Friday night in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
The loss brings the Saints' record to 3-6 on the season, and down to .500 overall in conference play. First-place Vassar remained undefeated, holding St. Lawrence off with a big second quarter.
Despite the loss, St. Lawrence head coach
Dan Roiger said the team is making strides.
"Sometimes it's hard to see progress after losing by 17 points, but we are making some," he said. "We had so many defensive possessions tonight where we played well for 20 or 25 seconds and then made some mistakes to give them layups. But the 20-25 seconds was fabulous, we just need to finish the possession. We made a good run in the third quarter when we made buckets, but we had too many and too long of dry spells."
The Saints began the game with an 8-7 lead early, sticking with the top team in the Liberty League during the first quarter. Vassar would take the lead before the end of the first quarter, and wouldn't relinquish it until the end of the game after that point.
Vassar outscored St. Lawrence 17-6 in the second quarter and had their largest offensive output in the fourth when they put up 20 points. Julia Harvey led the way for the Brewers, dropping 20 points.
Flynn's 11 points led the Scarlet and Brown, while the Brentwood, Tenn. native also notched 11 boards.
Jackie Malley and
Hannah Van Dyke each drained two three-balls, tying for the team high in that category.
It's a quick turnaround for the Saints, who remain on then road and head to Bard for the second game of the road trip in Annandale-On-Hudson, N.Y. Tip off from the Stevenson Athletic Center is set for 2 pm.
