Despite entering the second half with a slim lead, the St. Lawrence University men's basketball team had their three-game win streak snapped at the hands of Vassar Friday night in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., as they dropped a 66-51 decision to the Brewers.
The loss drops St. Lawrence to a 6-4 overall record on the season and 2-2 in Liberty League play.
Vassar had the lead early in the game, building up a significant 14-7 advantage over St. Lawrence in the game's first 10 minutes. The Saints began chipping away and gradually trimmed down the Brewers' lead until
Trey Syroka's lay-up with 3:17 on the clock made it 22-21 Saints.
St. Lawrence increased their lead to five before Vassar hit a three-ball with five seconds to play in the game's opening half to cut the Saints' lead to 26-24 after the first half.
Both teams traded three-pointers to open the second half, going shot-for-shot early before Vassar was able to take the lead on a three-point play by Logan Scott, drawing a
Carter Storey foul off a lay-up and draining the free throw to make it 33-32 at 14:41 of the second.
That lead was enough for Vassar to pull away, ultimately building on their advantage and ending the game with their largest lead of night, a 15-point advantage over St. Lawrence.
Vassar converted on the chances they manufactured in the game. While the turnover battle was close – St. Lawrence registered 15 to Vassar's 13 – the Saints were outscored 22-6 in points off turnovers in the contest.
The Saints had positive offensive performances despite the loss, with Adam Dudzunski leading the way at 15 points.
Aidan Macaulay registered 11 points while
Andrew Cowan added 10 of his own.
There will be a quick opportunity for the Scarlet and Brown to get back into the win column, as they travel to Bard to face the Raptors Saturday, Jan. 6. The game's opening tip is set for 4 p.m.
