A notable offensive performance from the Macaulay brothers helped the St. Lawrence University men's basketball team get back in the win column with a wire-to-wire victory Saturday night.
Aidan Macaulay had the team lead with 19 points, while
Gavin Macaulay chipped in with 17 of his own as the Saints downed Bard 69-45 on the road for their first win of 2024.
The Saints began the game with a 10-0 run to go up big early, and by the halfway point of the first half they had extended their lead to 16 with the score sitting at 26-10. Bard outscored St. Lawrence 7-1 in the last five minutes of the half to cut the Saints' lead down to 10, but the away side was still enjoying a large lead headed to the break.
A strong second-half start by the Raptors trimmed the Saints lead down to six at 16:47 of the second half, with the score sitting at 35-29. St. Lawrence had the lion's share of scoring from that point on, stretching the lead to 26 in the game's final minute as
Tate Kuiper drained a three-ball with 46 seconds to go. Bard cut the lead to 24 before the final buzzer, giving the game its final score.
The Saints scored a large margin of their points off turnovers, outscoring Bard 22-8 in that category and contributing to the large lead they built over the course of the evening.
Liberty League play will now continue for the Saints as Union heads to Burkman Gymnasium for the Saints' first home contest of 2024 on Friday, Jan. 12. Opening tip is set for 7:30 p.m.
