Elizabeth Flynn was a key cog in getting the Saints out to a lead, sinking a deep 21-footer and laying in a right-handed floater. Things remained close early on, but thanks to a three from senior guard
Shannon Rhone, the Scarlet and Brown led by as many as five points in the first.
However, RIT rallied together a pair of jumpers and a three, tabbing the lead 15-13 after the first ten minutes of play.
Things started slow for the Saints in the second quarter, shooting just 2-for-9 from the field in the quarter's first five minutes. Once again, it was Rhone providing a spark with a swished triple to cut the Tigers lead to four. Rhone's three got the Saints going, as they capitalized on a 9-to-4 run to end the half down just 27-26.
Despite being down by as many as seven points, the Scarlet and Brown were able to knot things up at 35 with a few minutes to spare in the third, thanks to important rebounds from
Hannah Van Dyke, and
Katie Chisholm. The Saints kept chipping away and ultimately a
Norah Niesz three-ball gave them the lead back at 40-39. Sophomore guard
Jackie Malley and freshman
Annie Perry both sunk important free throws to give St. Lawrence three-point lead with 14 seconds left.
"That was a grinding game on offense, every basket was hard to get," said head coach
Dan Roiger. "But we had some really good plays at critical times and made enough plays to get the lead and then clinched it with Annie's and Jackie's free throws."
Roiger also singled out Norah and
Katie Chisholm as making big late plays to preserve the lead in the dying minutes of the contest.
Flynn stood out, scoring 19 with 13 rebounds, good for a double-double and a team-high in points for St. Lawrence.
The Saints have a busy week ahead, as they go to Clarkson Tuesday evening for a road contest before returning home for two home contests against Bard and Vassar on Jan. 26 and 27.
