A solid first-half performance was mirrored in the second as the St. Lawrence University women's basketball team continued 2024 Liberty League play with a 71-53 victory over the visiting Union Garnet Chargers Friday evening at Ronald T. Burkman Gymnasium.
The win sees the Saints improve to 5-7 on the season, 4-2 in league play as they enter the thick of their Liberty League schedule.
St. Lawrence controlled from the tip-off, building an 18-15 lead after the opening quarter. Three-pointers from Hannah Van Dyke and Annie Perry led the attack for the Scarlet and Brown.
Union would cut the lead to two with 8:05 left in the second quarter before a 16-7 run by the Saints, who never trailed in the game, to close out the quarter with a score of 37-26 headed into halftime.
The second half started in a similar fashion with the Saints scoring the first five points to push their lead to 16. A three-minute scoring drought in the quarter was broken thanks to a pull-up jumper by Margaret Dougher which pushed the lead to 15. Both teams traded baskets before the Saints scored twice to take a 52-33 advantage headed into the final quarter.
Union edged St. Lawrence 20-19 in the final stanza as the Saints would lock-up a crucial home league win.
Elizabeth Flynn led the charge for the Scarlet and Brown compiling a double-double on the night with 11 points and 13 rebounds. Norah Niesz added 12 points while Annie Perry chipped in 10 points and 4 assists in the winning effort
The Saints will have a quick turnaround as they host Ithaca in another home Liberty League matchup Saturday, January 13th. Opening tip is scheduled for 2 p.m.
