The Saints opened the North Country Classic going the distance after going up two sets to one, but the St. Lawrence University volleyball ultimately fell 3-2 to Oswego State on Friday afternoon in the Burkman Gymnasium.
The Scarlet and Brown fell to 1-3, while the Lakers improved to 1-3.
"Often the outcome of a match comes down to winning the serve/serve receive battle and we were very sloppy with our serving tonight as a team," said head coach
Shelly Roiger "Oswego has a lot of offensive options and when we didn't send the ball over with purposefulness, their setter was allowed to set all their weapons. We played young at the end of the match. When you lead set 5 by a score of 12-10, those are moments that you should own and finish, especially at home. We didn't execute like we needed to down the stretch. The sun will rise tomorrow, we will turn the page, and be ready."
The Saints started off hot taking a 7-3 set in set one which capped off a 5-1 run. Later in the set, St. Lawrence would go off another 4-0 run fueled by three straight kills from
Vivian Zymeck. The Lakers would answer right back winning six of the last seven points when the score was 20-20 to take the first.
In the second set, the Scarlet and Brown used a pair of 5-0 runs to jump out to an 18-13 lead, but an Oswego run put them down 19-18. Zymeck would once again steady the ship before kills from
Vanessa Latam and
Kate Gardner won the Saints the set.
St. Lawrence continued to play strong jumping out to a 20-13 lead in the third with an
Adeline Riesenberger kill. The Lakers attempted a comeback but were immediately squashed by a 3-0 run that set up another set win putting the Saints up 2-1.
Oswego returned the favor in the fourth set going up 16-6 as they saw the match slipping away. The set would teeter back and forth as
Araiza Acum-Santos and Zymeck kept the Saints in the set with kills to make it 18-10. St. Lawrence would get within five with a pair of service aces to make it 21-16 but a 4-0 run by the Lakers forced the deciding set.
Zymeck started the fifth on the right track with back-to-back kills, but an Oswego counterpunch put them up 3-2. The Lakers claimed a 10-8 lead, but a 4-0 run fueled by kills from Riesenberger, Gardner, and Zymeck gave the Scarlet and Brown the 12-10 lead. The Lakers locked in and took the next five points to claim the match.
Zymeck was excellent for the Saints with a match-high 21 kills, while
Vanessa Latam posted 35 assists.
Kori Meissner and
Katrina Henrich both posted 15 digs in the effort.
St. Lawrence will be back at home tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. to take on Hamilton to close the North Country Classic.
