Saints Fall to Union in Liberty League Opener

The St. Lawrence University football team opened Liberty League play on the road, as the Saints suffered a 34-0 loss to the Union Garnet Chargers on Saturday afternoon in Schenectady, N.Y.

Will Lederman finished with eight completions for 66 yards and ran for 35 yards, while Cole Salyards caught three passes for 44 yards and Aidan Keefe rushed for 10. Grady Harrington led the defense with eight tackles and combined with Savino Morelli for a sack.

The Saints opened with a huge 43-yard return from Cole Salyards to set up a good field position heading into their first drive of the game, but the Union defense put a quick stop on the Saints and forced them to punt.

Chargers quarterback Donovan Pacatte connected with Landers Green for an 11-yard pass to put Union on the board first with 9:06 to play in the first quarter. Max Gluck's first kick was good for the 7-0 lead.

Just about seven minutes later, Union added its second touchdown of the game with a 15-yard run from Michael Fiore with 2:23 to go.

Gluck added a 29-yard field goal to put the Chargers up 17-0 with 5:20 to play in the second and Fiore ran in for his second touchdown of the game with 55 seconds to go to help Union build a 24-0 lead by halftime.

In the third quarter, Pacatte found Tommy Leonard with a 21-yard pass, and Gluck's kick was good for the 31-0 lead. Gluck continued to connect with his second field goal of the game with 5:15 to go in the fourth, making it 34-0.

The fourth quarter remained scoreless, but the Chargers held on for the shutout effort.

Pacatte threw 16-for-25 for 181 yards, while Green caught seven passes for 82 yards and Fiore led the ground game with 91 yards on 20 attempts. Cole DaSilvia and Ethan VanderBrink finished with four tackles each, while three of VanderBrink's recorded tackles for the loss.

Union finished with a 25-8 advantage in first dons and converted on six third-down opportunities. The Chargers recorded 391 yards of total offense to the Saints' 136.

With the loss, the Saints fell to 2-3 on the season and 0-1 in league play, while Union improved to 5-0 and 1-0, respectively.

The Saints are off next weekend and will return to Leckonby Stadium on Saturday, October 14 against the University of Rochester Yellowjackets. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
