Rochester Defeats Saints at Leckonby Stadium

Junior quarterback Will Lederman recorded three touchdowns, but the University of Rochester Yellowjackets recorded 497 yards of total offense to defeat the St. Lawrence University football team 37-27 on Saturday afternoon at Leckonby Stadium.

Lederman passed 14-for-27 for 197 yards and two touchdowns and also led the game on the run with 102 rushing yards and his third touchdown. Cole Salyards tallied five catches for 75 yards, while Cole Salyards and Cameron Giunta caught four passes each.

On the defensive side, Joseph O'Neil and Ben Munn each recorded eight tackles, while Ryan Surhoff and Thomas Our each tallied one sack for the loss of eight and six yards, respectively. Daniel George finished the afternoon with five tackles and an interception, while four different Saints each notched a pass breakup.

The Saints were first on the board on Saturday afternoon, as Lederman connected with Salyards with a game-long 50-yard pass to give the Scarlet and Brown the early edge at 3:09 of the first quarter. Fogler's kick was good for the 7-0 lead after the first 15 minutes of play.

Rochester was forced to opt for the field goal early in the second quarter, as Jordan Laudani capitalized on a 35-yard field goal to bring the game back within four. The Yellowjackets would score with a second field goal at 8:31 of the second to bring the game back within one.

A 75-yard run by Daniel Papantonis and a seven-yard pass from Ryan Rose to Aidan Papantonis, would allow Rochester to score 23 unanswered points and take a 20-7 lead at halftime and a 23-7 lead early in the third quarter.  

At 6:21 of the third, the Saints would add their second touchdown of the game, as Lederman capped a 65-yard drive with a 12-yard run. The Saints opted for the two-point conversion but were unsuccessful.

The teams would then trade touchdowns, as Will Varney put the Yellowjackets up 30-13 with a 44-yard run and Giunta snuck in with a one-yard run, bringing the score to 30-20.

Daniel Papantonis scored his second touchdown of the game with a 32-yard run and Jordan Laudani's kick was good to cap the scoring for Rochester and 37.

St. Lawrence would finish off the game for their final touchdown, as Lederman found Joseph Ott with a 28-yard pass and Ott tip-toed into the endzone, but the Yellowjackets would hold the final possession and run down the clock for the win.



Rose threw 18-for-31 for 232 yards and one touchdown, while Daniel Papantonis led the Yellowjackets ground game with 157 rushing yards and two touchdowns and Varney added 117 yards and one touchdown. Aidan Papantonis finished with 109 yards on six receptions and one touchdown. Simon Weeren led the defense with nine tackles, one tackle for the loss and two pass breakups.

St. Lawrence held a 21-19 edge in first downs, tallied 388 total yards on offense and led in passing yards 244-to-232. Rochester finished with 265 rushing yards to the Saints' 144. The Yellowjackets converted on 7-of-16 third-down opportunities, while the Saints went 5-for-13.

With the loss, the Saints fell to 2-4 overall and 0-2 in Liberty League play, while Rochester improved to 5-2 and 2-1, respectively.

St. Lawrence will remain at home, as they host the RPI Engineers on Saturday, October 21. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
