Saints Suffer 37-7 Loss to RPI

A touchdown by Cole Salyards tied the game for the Saints in the first quarter, but the RPI Engineers scored 27 points in the second half to defeat the St. Lawrence University 37-7 on Saturday afternoon at Leckonby Stadium.

Will Lederman passed 14-for-29 for 113 yards for one touchdown and ran 22 yards on the afternoon for the Scarlet and Brown. Cole Salyards finished with four catches for 59 yards, while Matt Ciesielski caught seven passes for 46.

Liam Perkins led the Saints defense with nine tackles, while Owen O'Brien and Joseph O'Neil each recorded seven. Savino Morelli, Thomas Our and Evan Pastino each recorded a sack, while Ryan Surhoff recorded six tackles, including one for the loss of three yards, while Matthew Dahill finished with one block and one quarterback hurry. Colin Wanat and Nicholas Giardina both finished with one pick each on the afternoon.

Sterling Walker-Sutton opened the scoring for the Engineers with a 39-yard punt return and Jared Elstein connected on his first kick of the afternoon to make it 7-0 RPI.

Just about five minutes later, Lederman connected with Salyards with an 11-yard pass to cap a 68-yard drive. Clayton Fogler's kick was good to tie the game 7-7 with 4:49 to play in the first quarter.

The second quarter was a battle of the defense and remained scoreless until RPI opted for a field goal with 30 seconds to play. Elstein recorded a 34-yard field goal, and the Engineers took a 10-7 lead just before halftime.

Hayden Faraday scored his first touchdown of the afternoon with a 35-yard pass from quarterback Jake Kazanowsky, extending the lead to 17-7.

Sean Kelly and Faraday would add two more touchdowns for the Engineers to lead 30-7 heading into the fourth quarter.

RPI's Christian Buckley capped the scoring with an 11-yard touchdown run, making the final score 37-7.



Kazanowsky threw 15-for-22 for 204 yards and three touchdowns, while Kayden White led the ground game with 76 yards on 12 attempts and Faraday caught three passes for 97 yards and two touchdowns. Anthony D'Agostino led the RPI defense with six tackles, while four other members of the Engineers squad finished with five and Nate Sicard recorded four hurried efforts.

RPI finished with a 21-17 edge in first downs and recorded 375 yards of total offense to the Saints' 246. The Engineers converted on 7-of-11 third-down opportunities, while the Saints went 7-for-18.

With the loss, the Saints fell to 2-5 on the season and 0-3 in Liberty League play, while RPI improved to 6-1 and 2-1, respectively.

St. Lawrence will travel to Geneva, N.Y. next weekend to take on Hobart, Saturday October 28 at 1 p.m.
