Ryan Surhoff had a great day on defense for the Scarlet and Brown, but the St. Lawrence University football team fell to Hobart 35-0 on Saturday afternoon in Geneva, N.Y.
Surhoff led the Saints' defense with eight tackles, including two for the loss of 12 yards, one forced fumble, one pass breakup and one quarterback hurry.
Owen O'Brien finished with six tackles, one for the loss of 12, and one pass breakup and
Liam Perkins finished with a 30-yard interception.
Will Lederman passed 12-for-26 for 95 yards and ran for 18, while
Cole Salyards recorded five receptions for 58 yards and
Shea Goodwin caught three passes for 22 yards.
Tim Denham Jr. finished off a 63-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown run and Tobias Wefering's first kick of the day was good to give Hobart a 7-0 lead with 3:12 remaining in the first quarter.
The Saints looked to close the gap, but Lederman's pass for
Cole Salyards was intercepted by Mekhi Rodgers and the Statesmen would maintain possession at the end of the first frame.
Hobart extended their lead as Denham Jr. ran 51 yards for his second touchdown of the game with 5:12 to play in the second and Donjuan McGee intercepted a pass from Lederman and ran 32 yards for a third touchdown, just 17 seconds later.
Two more kick attempts from Wefering and the Statesmen led 21-0 at halftime.
After the break, the third quarter was a battle of the defense and neither team allowed points on either side of the scoreboard.
In the fourth quarter, Rayshawn Boswell scored a five-yard touchdown run, increasing Hobart's lead to 28-0 and Denham Jr. scored his third touchdown of the game with a four-yard run and Wefering's fifth kick of the day was good to cap scoring for the day.
Johnny Colombi passed 13-for-25 for 171 yards, while Denham Jr. and E.J. Taylor both rushed for 73 yards and Ahmad Crowell caught four passes for 60 yards. Joe McCoy led the defense with seven tackles, while Jaimen Bliss recorded one tackle for the loss of eight yards. Rodgers and McGee each finished with a pick.
Hobart finished with 421 yards on offense and held the Saints to 142. The Statesmen recorded a 21-8 advantage on first downs and converted on 8-of-14 third-down opportunities.
The Saints fell to 2-6 on the season and 0-4 in conference play, while Hobart improved to 6-2 and 2-2, respectively.
St. Lawrence will host Ithaca for its final home game of the season on Saturday, November 4. Kick off is scheduled for 1 p.m. and the Saints will honor the 21 members of the Class of 2024 with a senior day ceremony prior to kickoff.
