Maddie Greco's two goals were the difference Saturday afternoon, as the Union Garnet Chargers left North Country Field at Hall-Leet Stadium with a 2-1 victory over the St. Lawrence Saints field hockey team.
The loss is the second in conference play for St. Lawrence. Their record now sits at 0-2 in Liberty League action and 3-6 overall.
The teams played to a tight first quarter in which no scoring was recorded. But after the Saints and Union had essentially been even in offensive chances, it was the Garner Chargers who took over in the second. Maddie Greco got the scoring started for the Garnet Chargers at 17:27, making it 1-0.Â
While the score remained 1-0 into halftime, the Saints failed to register a shot in the second quarter, with goalkeeper Cara Vredenburg keeping them in the game.Â
Union extended their lead in the third quarter with Greco getting her second of the game. St. Lawrence needed to kickstart their offense after the second Union goal and were able to do it on a mad scramble. Caroline Hamilton got the last touch on the goal at 43:17 to cut the lead to one.
The Saints applied a ton of pressure in the last stages of the game but were unable to beat Marion Stuntz in the Garner Chargers' net. She made seven saves over the course of the contest.
Union controlled was able to amassed the lion's share of offense in the game, directing 14 shots on target. Cara Vredenburg made 12 saves in the losing effort.
It's a quick turnaround for St. Lawrence, as they now head out to the road to play Hamilton Tuesday at 5 pm in Clinton, N.Y. for a non-conference match-up.
