Five different members of the St. Lawrence University women's hockey team found the back of the net en route to a 5-1 season-opening win over Mercyhurst on Friday night for Alumni Weekend at Appleton Arena.
With the win, the Saints improved to 1-0-0 on the season, while Mercyhurst fell to 2-1-0.
Taylor Lum was the first on the board for the Scarlet and Brown, as she beat Lakers goaltender Ena Nystrøm on the right side just 54 seconds into the first period.
Mae Batherson assisted on the play.
Making quick work of the second period, Gosling was the second to score just 53 seconds in on the power play, as Batherson tallied her second assist of the game and
Katina Duscio also had a hand in the play.
Just over a minute and a half later, Thea Johansson beat
Emma-Sofie Nordström glove side to bring the game back within one.
At 13:07 of the second,
Abby Hustler attempted the initial wrap around, but was stopped by Nystrøm. However, Segedi was right on the doorstep to make it 3-1 St. Lawrence heading into the third period.
Kennedy Wilson added her first of the season, outside of exhibition play, with assists to Segedi and Hustler. First-year
Abby Hehl capped scoring for the Scarlet and Brown with her first collegiate goal at 16:51.
Hillary Sterling recorded her first helper of the season, while
Kennedy Emerson added her first collegiate point to the score sheet as well.
"What a day for St. Lawrence women's hockey," said head coach
Chris Wells. "We were able to recognize so many former players who had such an influence on the program! There are very few places like SLU and it was evident today for everyone to enjoy and we're happy to have alumni back from all ages."
Â
"I felt like we played a solid game as we capitalized early to settle some nerves," Wells added. "Mercyhurst played hard and physical and kept us from our game early on. A couple of nice plays extended the lead for us to allow the win and tomorrow will be another hard fought game for sure."
Nordström posted her first-career win for the Saints with 23 saves, while Nystrøm stopped 42 shots for the Lakers.
St. Lawrence finished with a 47-24 advantage in shots.
The Saints and the Lakers will meet for a second matchup, tomorrow September 30. Puck drop is scheduled for 3 p.m.
