The St. Lawrence Saints field hockey team held a lead heading into the fourth quarter, but Skidmore found their way back into the game and ultimately walked out of North Country Field at Hall-Leet Stadium with a 2-1 overtime win Saturday afternoon.
The result brings the Saints' conference record to 0-1.
Despite the loss, Saints head coach
Fran Grembowicz saw much to be proud of in her team's first Liberty League game.
"We played a beautiful field hockey passing game," said Grembowicz. "Our defense controlled the backfield and we played together as a unit. It was a tough loss, but we are improving our game every time we hit the field."
The Saints began by controlling most of the game's attack, including badly outshooting Skidmore 9-3 in the game's first half. They had a good chance on a
Suzanne L'Hommedieu shot early in the first and weren't able to crack Victoria Bodnar in the Thoroughbreds net.
However, the Saints did strike first in the second quarter on a shot by
Mayson Blondek that found its way in at 20:04 to make it 1-0 St. Lawrence.
But Skidmore hung around to make things interesting and ended up taking advantage late in the game, after the start of the fourth quarter. Abby Ezickson finished a rebound off a long-range shot by Gillian Maher at 48:30 to tie the game 1-1, sending it to overtime.
Then, just minutes into the extra frame, Kayla Hassett found some space in the open field and fired one past
