A strong defensive game from the Gulls held the St. Lawrence University football team to just 109 yards of total offense, as Endicott shutout the Saints 31-0 in their season opener on Saturday afternoon at Hempstead Stadium in Beverly, Massachusetts.
Saints' quarterback
Daniel Lawther passed 8-for-14 for 43 yards, while
William Turner and William Lederman both saw some action for the Scarlet and Brown.
Aidan Keefe led the ground game with 19 yards, while
Shea Goodwin finished with four catches for 29 yards.
On defense,
Daniel George,
Grady Harrington,
Nicholas Giardina and
Thomas Our all finished with five tackles, while
Liam Perkins forced one fumble and
Colin Wanat picked up for the fumble recovery.
Opening the scoring for Endicott, Michael Vecchione capped off a 70-yard play with a 32-yard run, scoring the Gulls first touchdown of the afternoon. Ryan Smith's kick was good for the extra point and the 7-0 lead.
Gulls' quarterback Clayton Marengi scored the second on the run for Endicott, with a five-yard touchdown to close out a 10-play drive.
Marengi then connected with Ryan Freiberger with a 30-yard pass and the Gulls third touchdown. Smith's third kick was good and gave Endicott a 21-0 advantage, which they carried into halftime.
Smith added a 34-yard field goal, increasing the Gulls lead to 24-0 with 6:10 to play in the third quarter.
The Saints opened the fourth quarter with the ball, but the Gulls forced a turnover on downs on the Scarlet and Brown's first drive, and quickly put the ball back in the end zone as Marengi found Adam Goodfellow for a 37-yard touchdown and the 31-0 lead.
Marengi passed 14-for-18 for 186 yards and two touchdowns, and led the Gulls' ground game with 79 on eight attempts and one touchdown. Goodfellow finished with five catches for 78 yards. Joe Tirrell finished with nine tackles, while Matthew Licciardi recorded seven tackles and four tackles for the loss of 14 yards.
Endicott finished with 367 yards on offense to the Saints 109 and rushed 172 yards to St. Lawrence's 41.
The Saints will host Norwich for a battle of the Hoffman Cup under the lights at Leckonby Stadium on Friday, September 8 at 7 p.m.
