Saints Secure Hoffman Cup with 14-7 Win Over Norwich, Lawther Named MVP

Junior quarterback Daniel Lawther was 12-for-22 passing with one touchdown and 144 passing yards to lead the St. Lawrence University football team to a 14-7 win over Norwich on the 21st anniversary of the Hoffman Cup game under the lights at Leckonby Stadium on Friday night.

With the 144 passing yards and 84 yards rushing, Lawther was named the Most Valuable Player for the St. Lawrence squad.

William Murray rushed for 66 yards on 16 attempts, while Aidan Keefe rushed for 44 on 15. Shea Goodwin made three catches for 77 yards, including a 49-yard run for his first career touchdown. On the defensive side, Daniel George, Ben Munn and Matthew Dahill all recorded six tackles, while George and Owen O'Brien each recorded an interception. Grady Harrington finished with five pass breakups, while O'Brien recorded three.

After a defensive battle and a scoreless first quarter of play, the Cadets were first on the board. Ryan O'Keefe capped a 10-play drive with a one-yard run for the first touchdown of the game. Zach Buchy's kick was good for the extra point and the 7-0 lead.

The third quarter saw another stalemate, as Norwich carried their one-touchdown lead into the final frame.

In the fourth, Lawther connected with Goodwin on a 49-yard pass and Clayton Fogler's kick was good to find the equalizer. Murray then ran in on a four-yard run for the Scarlet and Brown's second touchdown and ultimately the 14-7 win, also recording his first career touchdown.

The Saints defense stepped it up in the second half, recording three pass breakups in the third and a huge interception at Norwich's 32-yard line in the fourth, as well as three more break ups.

O'Keefe threw 7-for-19 for 45 yards, while Jehric Hackney rushed for 108 yards on 16 attempts to lead the Cadets offense. Imari Milton led the defense with 10 tackles, while Maddox Reed recorded one sack and Iva Hayes finished with one tackle for the loss of 13 yards.

St. Lawrence finished with a 22-9 first-down advantage, recorded a 305 to 174 advantage in total offense and converted on 11 of 18 third-down conversions.

With the win, the Saints improved to 1-1 on the season, while Norwich fell to 0-2.

Next weekend the Saints travel back to Massachusetts to take on Western New England on Saturday, September 16 at 1 p.m.
