Zoe Rogan and
Emma Reynolds scored in the first and second half to lift the St. Lawrence University women's soccer team to a 2-0 win in their Liberty League opener at Union College on Tuesday afternoon.
The Scarlet and Brown improved to 3-2-2 (1-0-0) on the season, while the Chargers fell to 2-3-1 (0-1-0).
"We're really proud of this team and they thoroughly deserve this win," said head coach
Sinead McSharry "'Peak passion' was the theme and they showed that from the beginning all the way through to the end. Every single person played a huge part in this win today and the energy was exceptional."
After a hard-fought first half, where both clubs traded shots, fouls, and corner kicks, Rogan got the scoring started for the Saints. In the 41st minute,
Kaitlyn Barton fired a beautiful pass from the left side of the Garnet Charger box, setting up Rogan for a great look at the net, leading to the first goal of the contest to give St. Lawrence the lead.
The goal was the second of the season for Rogan who now leads the team in scoring. Barton collected her first assist of the season and second of her still-young career.
During the second half of play, it was the Scarlet and Brown once again flying around and doing the scoring. This time it was Reynolds, who buried her shot. Madison Kinig-Thurber launched a perfect cross in towards the goal mouth that Reynolds was on the other end of. The senior struck the ball out of the air and past the goalkeeper to claim the 2-0 lead.
Goalkeeper
Keely Snode and the Saints defense locked up Union the rest of the way to give the goalkeeper her third straight shutout.
Snode, a senior captain, saved all 5 shots she faced, including one that bounced off the right post at the start of the second half.
The Scarlet and Brown were outshot 9-to-7, but still came out victorious. Reynolds and the Saints have outscored opponents 5-to-2 on the road trip thus far, and are looking to continue their rapidly growing momentum.
St. Lawrence will head to Troy, New York, this Saturday, where they will play their next Liberty League match against RPI.
