Saints Blank Utica for Second Shutout Win in a Row

Lily Gubbins and Maggie Spire scored for the St. Lawrence Saints as they left Utica, N.Y. Tuesday with their second road win in as many games, 2-0 over Utica.

The win brings their non-conference record to 3-3 ahead of the start of Liberty League play at home on Saturday, Sept. 23.

"It was a hard fought win," said Fran Grembowicz, the Saints' head coach. "Our passing game was spot on today and we really ramped up our pressure in the second half. We want to keep this momentum going into our home opener Sunday.

Gubbins got the scoring started for the Saints at 27:53 when she took a pass from Kara Dominick and broke Utica keeper Hannah Young's shutout bid early with her second goal of the season. Gubbins also led the team offensively in the shot count, totaling five on the evening.

Gubbins wasn't done her offensive contributions there, as she then drew an assist on the second goal of the game for St. Lawrence. She found Maggie Spire with a pass, and the team's leading scorer added her fourth goal of the season at 55:06. This provided some insurance for the Saints.

Cara Vredenburg was perfect on the evening, recording five saves for the shutout win. It was the Baldwinsville, N.Y. native's second blanking in a row.

The Saints' home schedule continues with a conference-opening contest on Laurentian Weekend, when they welcome Skidmore to Hall-Leet Stadium. The game begins at 2 pm.
