Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Mogul's Strike Gives Men's Soccer 1-0 Win over Potsdam

Junior forward Max Mogul made a tremendous effort in the 7th minute to score his second goal of the year and give the St. Lawrence University men's soccer team a 1-0 win over SUNY Potsdam on Saturday afternoon at Sandy MacAllaster Field.

The Saints improved to 1-2-2 with the win, while the Bears fell to 3-1-1 on the year with the loss.

"I was really happy for the team today, they put in a very professional performance for teh win against a team we tied with last sason," said Mike Toshack "Many young players stepped up today making their first start at the NCAA -level and did very well. We now turn our attention to a difficult match across town on Tuesday. It's always a difficult place to play as we had a hard-fought 1-0 victory in 2021."

From the kickoff, the Scarlet and Brown were in attack mode pushing the offensive end. Mogul had an early chance in the 5th minute when a Michael McDougald feed in the box to the junior sailed wide off the foot of the junior.

Moments later, Mogul had the ball on the left wing and wouldn't miss his second opportunity. The forward shook the first defender and charged to the top corner of the box. Mogul outran a second Bear defender and curled a right-footed strike inside the far post to give the Saints the 1-0 lead.

St. Lawrence kept pushing with the lead getting a pair of shots on goal from Henry Brown that were stopped by Ian Schwartz. Mogul nearly scored his second of the game in the 28th minute but his heavy strike was stopped by a defender occupying the goal to keep it a one-goal contest.

McDougald and Mogul continued their momentum into the second half getting more shots onto the Potsdam woodwork. The Bears were able to push back with a Zach Saddlemire strike that was stymied by Ben Woelfinger in the 49th minute, then saw two shots miss the frame minutes later.

The Scarlet and Brown once again almost doubled their lead when Henry Hart found himself with some space in the Bears' zone, but his effort sailed high of Schwartz.

As the time winded down, Woelfinger, Jeremy Ogango, and Baker Diaz locked it down on the backend allowing just two shot attempts in the final 22 minutes. Both shot attempts were turned aside by Woelfinger in the Saints' net to preserve the win and the clean sheet.

Woelfinger finished with four saves in the game to give him his 19th career clean sheet. The goalkeeper is now just one shutout away from tying Sandy MacAllaster '78 for fifth in the Saints record books. Woelfinger's 261 career saves is also 17 away from MacAllaster who also occupies fifth in career saves.

St. Lawrence dominated to the tune of 14-7 in shot attempts and 7-4 in shots on goal. Both teams had one corner kick each in the game.

The Scarlet and Brown will have a quick turnaround as they head across town next Tuesday to take on SUNY Canton in a 7:00 p.m. derby.
