A second half penalty kick was the difference in the contest as the St. Lawrence University men's soccer team fell 1-0 to SUNY Oneonta on Sunday afternoon at Red Dragon Field.

The Saints moved to 0-2-2 on the season, while the Red Dragons improved to 4-0.

"Luckily, we are getting experience handling adversity and bad moments early in the season," said head coach Mike Toshack "Many young players gained lots of experience this weekend stepping up for injured starters and making a case for themselves. Most promising is the fight and never-give-up attitude which will serve us well once we hit league play. We look forward to playing Potsdam next weekend as we keep working towards the start of league play."

Oneonta came out in the first half well holding a 10-1 edge in shot attempts. Ben Woelfinger stood tall in the St. Lawrence woodwork stopping five shots in the opening 45 minutes of play.

Michael McDougald had the lone shot attempt for the Scarlet and brown in the first half, but his attempt sailed just right of the Oneonta net.

The Red Dragons kept pushing but couldn't solve the Saints' defense until the 58th minute when they were awarded a penalty kick. Ian Zingaro cashed in the opportunity to give Oneonta the lead.

The Scarlet and Brown would push back later in the half with shots from Henry Hart, Eric Edmonds, and Max Mogul but each attempt sailed high of the Red Dragon woodwork.

Woelfinger finished with six saves in the contest.

The Saints will be back in action at Sandy MacAllaster Field next weekend when the squad hosts SUNY Potsdam on Saturday, September 16 at 1:00 p.m.
