Sophomore
Caleb Clark and first-year
Tynan Creagh each drove in two runs in game two to give the St. Lawrence University baseball team a 9-2 win and a doubleheader split against Union in the Liberty League Crossover Series on Saturday afternoon in Amsterdam, N.Y.
Â
The Scarlet and Brown went to 12-20 on the year, while Union moved to 15-22.
Â
After a high scoring game one,
Michael Hutchins took the hill in game two and spun six innings of five-hit, one-run baseball for the Saints. The hurler struck out four batters in the win, while
Brendan Karadenes struck out three in the bottom of the seventh to slam the door on the Dutchmen. Clark went 5-for-8 on the day with one run and three RBI, while
Timothy Connor went 4-for-6 with two runs, two doubles, and an RBI.Â
Â
Game 1: St. Lawrence 2, Union 17 (9 Innings)
The Saints would be the first to jump on the scoreboard in game one in the top of the second. After a scoreless two-hit first inning,
Jimmy Liberatore hit a leadoff solo home run to left field putting the Saints up 1-0.
Â
The lead was short-lived as Union took the lead in the bottom of the second for good. The Dutchmen scored first on a sacrifice fly after a leadoff single, walk, and sacrifice bunt to put a runner at third. In the next at bat, a double to left center put Union ahead.
Â
The Dutchmen proceeded to hang a crooked inning in the third with four runs. Union scored on a triple, wild pitch, sacrifice fly and a solo home run to claim a 6-1 lead.
Â
Two more big innings in the fourth and fifth put the Dutchmen up 12-1.
Â
The Saints wouldn't score again until the top of the seventh when a Connor double set up a run. With the slugger at second base, Clark singled a ball up the middle to bring Connor around to home.
Â
A three-run home run in the bottom of the eighth followed by an RBI-single put the Dutchmen up for good 17-2.
Â
Brett Parker started on the mound for the Scarlet and Brown pitching three innings.
Joshua Polumbo,
John Igoe,
Jared Brenner,
James Morr, and
John Gannon each pitched an inning in relief.
Â
Game 2: St. Lawrence 9, Union 2 (7 Innings)
It took until the bottom of the third in game two for the first run to come across home plate. This time it was Union, who took the early lead turning a leadoff walk into a 1-0 lead. After the walk, the Dutchmen called a sacrifice bunt that was followed by an RBI-double.
In the next half-inning, the Saints would return serve with a run of their own. Much like the last inning, a leadoff walk came across home as
John Donnellan, who earned the free pass, was doubled home by
Huck Haun to tie up the contest.
Liberatore would earn his second RBI of the day in the top of the fifth as he hit a sacrifice fly to center field to bring home Creagh from third base.
The Scarlet and Brown broke open the game in the top of the sixth and took a significant lead.
Jackson Brinker started the crooked inning with a single that was followed by a Haun single, and a
Sean Desjardins hit by pitch.
Stephen Colangelo would deliver the first run home with a single through the infield to extend the lead to 3-1. Â
Next up was Creagh, who singled through the left side of the infield. The rookie would drive in two runs, but an error from the Dutchmen catcher allowed a third run to score. Connor kept the turnstiles rolling with an RBI-single of his own before Clark hit the big shot. With his teammate at first, Clark smashed a no-doubter over the tall left field fence to balloon the lead to 9-1 for the Saints.
The game rolled into the bottom of the seventh where Karadenes was handed the ball on the hill. Despite giving up a run in the inning, the sophomore was devastating striking out all three Union outs to slam the door on any comeback.
Hutchins moved to 2-2 with the win striking out four batters while giving up just one run in six innings of work.
The two teams will decide the series tomorrow in game three at Shuttlesworth Park in Amsterdam, N.Y. The nine-inning contest will start at noon.
