With such strong play in the Liberty League this season, the Saints and the Golden Knights were ready for a battle from the start. Wells got the ball rolling for the Scarlet and Brown, but the Saints were followed up by two from the Knights. Unassisted tallies from Sipher and Murphy put the Saints up 3-2 after the first quarter.
Â
Clarkson opened the second frame with a pair of man-up goals and outscored the Saints 3-1 to hold a 5-4 lead at halftime.
Â
After the break, Andrew Kearney put the Golden Knights up 6-4, but a man-down goal from Hutchinson sparked a four-goal run for the Saints to put them in the lead 8-6. Clarkson battled back on a 3-1 run to knot the game up 9-9. With both teams making key defensive plays in the final two minutes, the Saints and the Golden Knights would prepare for overtime.
Â
Both teams had solid opportunities in the extra frame, but it was
Ben Hutchinson that would seal the win for St. Lawrence. Â With less than a minute to go in overtime,
Stew Hutchinson held possession on the right side of the St. Lawrence offense. The clock moved closer to 30 seconds when he found his brother in the middle of the offensive zone.
Ben Hutchinson collected the pass, shook an overcommitted defender and threaded an overhand shot through the five-hole of the Clarkson goaltender to give the Scarlet and Brown the win with 29 seconds left in overtime.
Â
"I'm really proud of the effort of the entire team today, said head coach
Mike Mahoney. "It was a tightly contested game and both teams battled hard. We had some great stops defensively, some really good goaltending, and made plays on the offensive end in the clutch. We're happy to be able to practice tomorrow and get ready for the next one."
Â
Bryan Penney led Clarkson with three goals, while Matt Reilly scored twice and assisted on another. Golden Knights' goaltender Jacob Mattice grabbed a team-best four ground balls.
