Seven different Saints scored, but the fifth-seeded and 15
th-ranked St. Lawrence University men's lacrosse team fell to the top-seeded and third ranked RIT Tigers, 19-8, in the Liberty League Semifinals on Friday afternoon in Rochester, N.Y.
Mark Mahoney and
Cody Sipher led the Saints with two goals each, while
Judge Murphy recorded a goal and two assists and
Stew Hutchinson tallied one of each.
Ben Hutchinson,
Chase Malatesta and
Paddy Condon also scored for St. Lawrence. Condon also went 13-for-26 from the faceoff X and picked up a team-best 11 ground balls.
Joe Scarfi led the defense with four ground balls and two caused turnovers.
The Tigers got off to a hot start, outscoring the Scarlet and Brown to lead 5-2 after the first quarter. Malatesta and
Ben Hutchinson tallied goals for the Saints in the first.
RIT scored three straight to start the second and had their run broke up by a goal straight off the faceoff from Condon. The Tigers added three more to build an 11-3 lead over the Saints, but the Scarlet and Brown battled back with goals from Mahoney and Sipher to bring the game back within six.
The Tigers continued their run scoring the first three of the third quarter, increasing their lead to 14-5. But once again, the Saints responded well scoring the next three off the sticks of Murphy, Mahoney and
Stew Hutchinson to make it 14-8.
RIT scored another five to seal the win and Sipher ended the day's scoring with his second of the game.
"Well, that looked like an opponent that has won the last two national titles," said head coach
Mike Mahoney. "We ran into a buzz saw and couldn't quite get on track."
"I was proud of the team's willingness to continue to battle and they have a lot to be proud of as a group."
Clifford Gaston led the Tigers with six goals, while John Mozrall tallied three goals and three assists.
Saints' goaltender
Michael Marinello made 12 saves, while Will Sterrett made seven saves for RIT.
Elliott LaGorce came in for the final five minutes and made one save.
The Tigers outshot the Saints 54-34, including 32-17 in shots on goal. RIT also picked up 47 ground balls to the Saints' 31.
St. Lawrence fell to 12-6 overall, while RIT improved to 17-1 and will advance to the Liberty League Championship game on Sunday vs. Union.
The Saints will await the selection show on Sunday evening to see if they earn an at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament.
