Rachel Burke tallied four goals and the Saints scored nine goals in a strong first-quarter run, as the St. Lawrence University women's lacrosse team defeated Skidmore 15-9 in Liberty League action on Saturday afternoon at North Country Field.
Burke also finished with a pair of ground balls, while Powell added an assist, a ground ball, a caused turnover, and a draw control win.
Dana Fernandez added two goals, three ground balls, two draws and two caused turnovers, while
Jacqui Cloutier,
Liz Evans and
Neve Ley all scored for the Scarlet and Brown.
It was all St. Lawrence in the first quarter, as the Saints shutout the Thoroughbreds and scored nine straight goals to lead 9-0 at the end of the first quarter.
Skidmore notched a pair of goals to start the second, but Hillman's ninth of the season and Burke's 11th on the woman-up advantage, increased the Saints lead to 11-2 at the break.
The Saints continued to fire on all cylinders, scoring four straight goals to open the third quarter and increase their lead to 15-2.
Skidmore scored the final seven goals of the game, but the strong showing in the first quarter gave the Scarlet and Brown the ultimate edge.
"The team took the momentum from yesterday's win and had a very strong first quarter," said head coach
Chelsea Martin. "The team is starting to click and is excited for the second half of our season."
Gabriella Modesti, Maeve McKinley, Camille Pontone and Julia Cafasso all scored two goals each for the Thoroughbreds, while Emma Sellers and Skidmore goalkeeper Phoebe Beshlian picked up two ground balls.
Raelynn Bovenzi made six saves for the Saints, while Beshlian made seven saves for the Thoroughbreds.
The Saints outshot Skidmore 30-20, including 22-16 in shots on goal and held a slight 14-13 edge in draw control wins.
With a weekend sweep, the Saints improved to 5-5 on the season and 3-2 in league play, while Skidmore fell to 6-5 and 2-4.
St. Lawrence will travel to RPI to face the Engineers on Saturday, April 15 at 3 p.m.
