Hillman Scores Overtime Buzzer Beater, Saints Edge RPI 13-12

Box Score Bella Hillman scored with five seconds remaining in overtime to lift the St. Lawrence University women's lacrosse team to a 13-12 come-from-behind win over the RPI Engineers on Saturday afternoon in Troy, N.Y.

Dana Fernandez led the Scarlet and Brown with four goals, three ground balls, two caused turnovers and two draw control wins, while Charlotte Powell finished with a hat trick, one assist and four ground balls. Liz Evans added two goals and two assists, while Hillman scored twice and assisted on another, and Jacqui Cloutier also scored twice. Evans also finished with four ground balls, two caused turnovers and three draw control wins, while Ellie Camp caused three turnovers.

Goals from Fernandez, Powell, Evans and Cloutier, gave the Scarlet and Brown a 4-3 lead after the first quarter of play, but the Engineers rallied in the second frame, outscoring the Saints 6-2 to take a 9-6 lead at halftime.

The third quarter was a battle of the defense, with just one goal for each team, as the Engineers scored one goal on a free-position opportunity from Lauren DeLeo and the Saints scored on a woman-up advantage for Fernandez's second of the game.

RPI led 10-7 heading into the fourth quarter.

After a lightening delay between the third and fourth quarters, the Saints struck first, as Fernandez added her third of the game for the hat trick to bring the game back within two. St. Lawrence continued to rally with goals from Powell and Evans to tie the game up 10-10 with 10:31 remaining.

The Engineers scored the next two, increasing their lead back to 12-10, with just over five minutes to play.

Powell also recorded a hat trick scoring the next for the Saints off a quick pass from Evans to close the gap to one and Fernandez scored the game-tying goal with 1:03 to go to force overtime.

The Saints got the ball back with 17 seconds remaining in overtime, the Saints successful cleared the ball and Cloutier found Hillman on the edge of the crease, where she beat an Engineers' defender and goaltender for the overtime win.

"The team showed a lot of resiliency today and continues to work together well as a team," said head coach Chelsea Martin. "Our defense made some big stops and our offense shined in the fourth quarter."

Quinn Wollard and DeLeo each scored three goals for the Engineers, while Rylie Maready scored two goals, assisted on three others, picked up five ground balls and won 10 draws.

Raelynn Bovenzi made eight saves for the Saints, while Olivia Kimball made 10 for RPI.

St. Lawrence outshot RPI 33-29 including 23-20 in shots on goal. The Saints also picked up 22 ground balls to RPI's 16, while the Engineers led 21-8 in draw controls.

The Saints improved to 6-5 overall and 4-2 in Liberty League play, while RPI fell to 9-3 and 4-3.

St. Lawrence will host Route 11 rival Clarkson on Wednesday, April 19 at 4 p.m.
