Jacqui Cloutier scored five goals, including the game winner, to lead the St. Lawrence University women's lacrosse team to a 10-9 win over Union in Liberty League play on Friday afternoon in Canton, N.Y.
Cloutier also finished with two ground balls, two caused turnovers and three draw control wins.
Bella Hillman tallied two goals and an assist, while
Rachel Burke recorded one of each and
Dana Fernandez and
Charlotte Powell also scored for the Scarlet and Brown.
Kate Wilson was solid on defense causing four turnovers and picking up four ground balls, while Fernandez won three draws.
Out of the gate, the Saints scored the first three goals all within the first five minutes of play, including two of Cloutier's five. Union proved to be right in it from the start as well, scoring the next two and bringing the game back within one at the end of the first quarter.
A low scoring second quarter saw one goal each for the Saints and the Dutchwomen. Powell scored her 16th of the season, off a quick pass from Hillman and Greta Maurer scored for the Dutchwomen, as the Saints carried a 5-3 lead into the break.
Union opened scoring in the third frame, with goals from Drew Charlton and Sydney McPartlon to tie the game 5-5. Cloutier netted her 15th and 16th goals of the season as unassisted tallies to increase the Saints lead to 7-5. One more goal from the Dutchwomen brought them back within one heading into the fourth quarter.
Both teams tallied three goals each in the fourth quarter looking for the win, but ultimately Cloutier's fifth goal of the game with 4:22 remaining would give St. Lawrence the final edge.
"The team really came together and started clicking on offense and defense," said head coach
Chelsea Martin. "This was a great team win against a very competitive team."
Charlton led the Dutchwomen with four goals, three ground balls, four caused turnovers and five draw control wins, while Maurer scored two goals, assisted on another and won three draws.
Raelynn Bovenzi had a great game between the pipes and finished with 13 saves, while Sydney Widlitz made 10 saves for Union.
The Scarlet and Brown outshot Union 31-27, but the Dutchwomen held a 22-20 edge in shots on goal, picked up 19 ground balls to the Saints' 15 and finished with a 13-10 advantage in draw controls.
St. Lawrence improved to 4-5 overall, while Union fell to 6-3. Both teams moved to 2-2 in Liberty League action.
The Saints are back at it tomorrow, hosting Skidmore at 3 p.m. at North Country Field.
