Saints Record Four Extra Base Hits in 5-4 Win Over Dutchwomen

Sofia Camillieri had two of the team's four doubles as the St. Lawrence University softball team defeated Union 5-4 in Schenectady, N.Y. The second game of the doubleheader has been postponed due to the weather.

Vivian Johnson and Tori Rotundo started the game each working walks, and Johnson moved to third on a wild pitch. Meredith Rose batted in the three-spot and hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Johnson. Rotundo moved stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch, and Cora Ferguson made it runners on the corner by working another walk. Ferguson distracted the fielders by putting herself into a run-down, which allowed Rotundo to score and make it 2-0.

Camillieri hit her first two-bagger in the second inning, and Johnson batted her in with a double of her own. Tori Rotundo reached first on an outfield error which scored Johnson who was running on contact to make it 4-0 after one and a half innings.

Sofia Berryhill started in the circle, and gave up just one run, which came in the form of a second inning home run. She pitched four innings, allowing five hits and one walk. Layne Fritz relieved Berryhill for the final three innings. After walking her first two batters, they were left stranded as the Saints defense got out of the jam.

Ferguson worked a leadoff walk in the seventh and advanced to second on a wild throw. Fritz singled up the middle which scored Ferguson and give herself some more room to work with in the circle, making it 5-1.

That final run would prove important, as the Dutchwomen strung together a three-run final inning, but the tying run advanced no further than second base as Fritz earned her second save of the year and St. Lawrence won 5-4. Berryhill earned her third win of the year and lowered her ERA to 2.93.

The Saints improve to 4-5 in the Liberty League and 8-19 on the year, while Union falls to 5-6 in the league and are 13-16 overall. The second game of the twin bill's make up date has yet to be announced. The Scarlet and Brown return home for a SUNY Canton doubleheader on May 2nd with the first game scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
