The two teams exploded for 16 runs combined in the fifth and sixth innings, but it was the St. Lawrence University baseball team that would outlast Clarkson 13-11 on senior day to take the weekend series on Sunday afternoon at Tom Fay Field.
The Scarlet and Brown improved to 11-19 on the year and 5-13 in Liberty League play, while the Knights fell to 11-21 and 9-9 in conference action.
Before the game the Saints honored the graduating Class of 2023 in
Ethan Baldwin,
Michael Goretti,
Huck Haun,
Jimmy Liberatore,
Brett Parker, and
Jack Sylvia.
Timothy Connor,
Sean Desjardins, and
John Donnellan each drove in two runs for the Saints, while
Stephen Colangelo was tremendous in the field and a threat on offense scoring thrice in the contest.
"Today was a great series win and send-off for the seniors," said head coach
Kenny Collins "It was not a pretty game by any means, but we found a way to make it work and keep fighting. I'm proud of our efforts over the last few weeks; we haven't had the results overall but the resilience has been a constant."
The high-scoring affair started slowly with the Knights taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning off a ground out. Connor would tie the game in the bottom half of the first with his third home run of the in as many games this weekend to make it 1-1.
Clarkson would tack on two more runs in the second off a pair of Saints' errors. The two teams would trade runs again with Connor providing a sacrifice fly that was answered by an RBI single bringing the score to 4-2 in favor of Clarkson.
The contest rolled into the bottom of the fifth where chaos would ensue. Colangelo started the half-inning with a walk, and was followed by
Tynan Creagh, and Connor, who also earned a free ride to first.
Caleb Clark cashed in on the loaded bases with an RBI single, but the walk party would resume with
Jackson Brinker in the next at-bat to tie the game at four.
Jimmy Liberatore gave the team the lead with a sacrifice fly, before
Sean Desjardins and
Huck Haun walked to take a two-run lead. After a strikeout, the Scarlet and Brown earned their seventh walk of the inning from Colangelo to take the 7-4 lead.
Clarkson wasted little time coming back dropping five of their own in the top of the sixth. Much like the Saints' onslaught, the inning began with a walk and the first run came across off a wild pitch. After a strikeout the Knights would get four straight hits to bring the score to 9-7.
Sam Fosberg would get the Saints out of the inning with one out away forcing a ground out and a key strikeout.
The seesaw came back to the Saints in the bottom of the sixth where they'd reclaim the lead. The inning began with two quick outs for St. Lawrence, but a walk, and a hit by pitch setup Desjardins for a long double off the right field wall to tie the game at 9-9. Another hit by pitch setup Donnellan to do the same except the first-year scorched his double off the left field fence to regain the lead. Creagh would bring another run home before Connor walked home the sixth run of the inning bringing the lead to 13-9.
The game would finally settle down and find rhythm and roll into the top of the ninth. Clarkson started the inning with a walk and a single in an attempt to comeback, but an RBI groundout and a sacrifice fly left them with just one more out.
Michael Watson would force a grounder to end the attack.
Senior
Brett Parker pitched five innings for the Saints giving up four earned on eight hits and struck out one.
Brendan Karadenes pitched a third of an inning before Fosberg took the bump. Fosberg ended up with the win pitching two and two thirds' innings giving up just two hits and no runs. Watson pitched the ninth for the Saints giving up one hit and no earned runs.
The Saints are scheduled to be back in action at Tom Fay Field on Tuesday against SUNY Canton at 3:00 p.m.
