Gamble Sends No. 5 Women's Tennis To Liberty League Semis With 5-4 Win Over No. 4 Union

It all came down to the last set of the last match, where senior Catherine Gamble came up clutch with a 6-4 win to give the fifth-seeded St. Lawrence University women's tennis team the 5-4 win over fourth-seeded Union in the first round of the Liberty League Tennis Championship at the Reis Tennis Center at Cornell University.

St. Lawrence improved to 10-5 on the season, while Union fell to 9-7.

The Saints will advance to the Liberty League Semifinals for the first time since 2020-21 and for just the second time since 2018.

The Scarlet and Brown win avenged a 7-2 loss at the hands of Union just 14 days ago in Schenectady, N.Y.

St. Lawrence claimed a 2-1 lead in the doubles portion of the match. At number two, Angelica Aksdal-Jansen, and Elena Styliades won a crucial, hard-fought match 8-7 (7-2) over Kennedy Alexis, and Chara Meidani. Then at three, Gamble and Meredith Macey claimed an 8-5 victory over Gabriella Gatto and Skylar Semon.

The Saints took at 3-1 lead in singles when at number three Aksdal-Jansen took on Meidani. The newcomer made quick work of the match winning 6-1, 6-1.

St. Lawrence would lose the next two matches to get to 3-3 before Maya Stepic put the team back up. At number six, the rookie Stepic took on Katelyn Hirnak and battled to a close 7-5, 6-4 win.

Another loss would put the match in the hands of Gamble at number one, who was in the third set. The senior lost her opening game to Marilena Karadimou 6-3 at number one to put her back against the wall. Gamble took a 6-4 win to force the third set where she would clinch her second win of the day and the team win with another 6-4 victory.

St. Lawrence will take part in tomorrow's semifinal round at the Reis Tennis Center at 8:30 a.m. against top-seeded Vassar, whose lone league loss this season came at the hands of the Saints on April 8th.
