Game Recap: Baseball |

Connor And Sylvia Power 2-0 Game Two Win; Baseball Splits DH At Clarkson

Timothy Connor hit his second home run of the day in game two, while Jack Sylvia was dealing on the bump racking up seven strikeouts to power the St. Lawrence University baseball team to a 2-0 win over Clarkson and a split of the day's doubleheader in Potsdam, N.Y. this afternoon.

The Saints went to 10-19 on the year and 4-13 in Liberty League play with the twin bill split, while Clarkson moved to 11-20 and 9-8 in conference play.

Connor was a star at the plate going 4-for-7 with two home runs, four RBI, and three runs scored in the two games. Caleb Clark went 2-for-4 in game one with two RBI for the Saints. Sylvia moved to 4-1 on the year with the game two gem going a complete game seven innings giving up just three hits and fanning seven Knight batters.

Game 1: St. Lawrence 9, Clarkson 10 (9 innings)

Offense was prevalent from the jump in game one with the Saints taking a 4-0 lead. In the top of the first, Connor hit his first two-run home run of the day scoring Tynan Creagh and racing out to a 2-0 lead. Creagh would drive in a run in the second inning and Clark walked home a run with the bases loaded to give the Scarlet and Brown the 4-0 lead.

Clarkson would get all of those runs back in the bottom of the second scoring a run on a groundout before driving in three more off a double and a single with two outs away.

Jimmy Liberatore broke the tie in the top of the fourth with an RBI single, that was answered with a Colby Brouillette homer in the bottom half of the inning bringing the game to 5-5.

In the top of the sixth, the Saints would strike again as Liberatore got aboard on a two-out walk. A Sean Desjardins single, was followed by Huck Haun, who singled a run home, while knocking the Clarkson starter out of the game. A throwing error after the pitching change brought the game to 7-5.

The game was moved to 8-5 in the top of the eighth with the Scarlet and Brown scoring on a fielder's choice, but a double and a sacrifice fly by Clarkson in the bottom of the eighth made it a one-run affair.

Clark added a sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth to make it 9-7, but it proved to not be enough. After a leadoff fly out, a hit by pitch followed by a single and a double by the Knights brought a run in. Clarkson's Millich would walk off the game with a two-run double taking the 10-9 win.

Michael Hutchins started on the hill pitching four innings and giving up one earned run and struck out one. Brenden O'Neil pitched the next three in relief giving up two hits, one earned, and struck out two. Michael Watson pitched one inning with a strikeout before handing the ball to Joshua Polumbo, who pitched a third of an inning in the ninth before Brett Parker took over.

Game 2: St. Lawrence 2, Clarkson 0 (7 Innings)

Game two was an opposite to game one as Sylvia and Nicholas Hofacker put on a pitching display.

Both teams were able to get some base runners early but were unable to string together hits and get to the fifth or sixth batters in the inning. Sylvia was able to fan five batters through the first four innings before the Saints would claim the lead.

In the top of the fifth, the game would see the lone run scored. After a leadoff strikeout, Creagh reached first base on an error by the shortstop. His stay wouldn't last long as Connor would hit his second home run of the day over the right field wall of Jack Phillips Stadium to take the 2-0 lead.

That was all St. Lawrence needed as Sylvia slammed the door on Clarkson stranding three Knights runners on base in the final three innings and striking out two batters to close out the win.

The two teams are scheduled to lineup tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. at Tom Fay Field to complete the weekend series.
