Charlotte Powell scored six goals to lead the Scarlet and Brown, but the St. Lawrence University women's lacrosse team fell to Vassar 12-11 on Saturday afternoon in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
With the loss, the Saints moved to 7-6 overall and 6-3 in conference play, while Vassar improved to 8-5 and 5-4.
Powell also picked up two ground balls, caused one turnover and won one draw, while
Dana Fernandez and
Jacqui Cloutier scored twice and
Bella Hillman scored once. Cloutier also picked up two ground balls, won six draws and caused one turnover.
Vassar got an early jump on the Saints, outscoring the Scarlet and Brown 5-1 by the end of the first quarter.
That wouldn't stop the Saints, as the tables turned in the second quarter and the Saints scored five unanswered. The Brewers tacked on two more in the final five minutes of the half to lead 7-6 at the break.
Vassar opened the third quarter with a goal from Emma Torkelson, but Hillman and Powell scored the next two to tie the game up 8-8.
It was a back-and forth battle to the finish, but the Brewers scored three in a five-minute span to ultimately edge the Saints, despite a late goal from Fernandez to bring St. Lawrence back within one.
Torkelson led the Brewers with four goals, two assists, two caused turnovers and two draw control wins.
Raelynn Bovenzi made six stops for the Saints, while Lauren Johns recorded 13 for Vassar.
St. Lawrence outshot Vassar 31-22 including 24-18 in shots on goal. Vassar held a 20-18 edge in ground balls, but the Saints edged the Brewers 14-13 in draws.
The Saints will host Nazareth in non-conference action for senior day on Tuesday, April 25 at 4 p.m.
