John Donnellan and sophomore
Sean Desjardins were able to drive in runs in the second innings, but the St. Lawrence University baseball team ultimately fell 16-2 to Ithaca College in their Liberty League opener at Falcon Park in Auburn, N.Y. on Sunday afternoon.
The Scarlet and Brown fell to 5-5 on the year and 0-1 in league play, while the Bombers improved to 11-8 and 3-1 in conference action.
Ithaca jumped on the Saints in a hurry scoring three runs in the bottom of the first off, a sacrifice fly, a hit by pitch, and a wild pitch.
St. Lawrence responded in the top half of the second with two runs of their own.
Timothy Connor started the inning with a single followed by a
Brett Federico double. One batter later, Donnellan brought Connor home with a sacrifice fly to left field making it 3-1. In the next at-bat, Desjardins brought Federico home with a sacrifice bunt to further cut into the lead.
The Bombers began to pull away in the bottom half of the second with a two-RBI double and an RBI single to balloon the lead to 6-2. The game was blown wide open in the third after a five-run inning from Ithaca punctuated by a three-run home run on an 0-2 count.
Ithaca tacked on five more runs in the sixth to further pull away from the Saints.
Philip Centineo started on the hill for the Scarlet and Brown and pitched a single inning along with
James Morr,
Danny Collins,
Brendan Karadenes, and
John Igoe.
Huck Haun got a majority of the innings from the bump pitching the 4th through 6th innings giving up two hits and striking out three.
Federico was effective in the six-spot going 3-3 with a double, a run, and a walk.
The Saints and Bombers will line back up at Falcon Park in Auburn, N.Y. tomorrow afternoon to complete their series. Game one of the twin bill will begin at 3:00 p.m.
