Clarkson Upsets No. 6 St. Lawrence, 14-9

Ben Hutchinson scored four goals, but a strong showing from the Golden Knights powered Clarkson to a 14-9 win over the sixth-ranked St. Lawrence University men's lacrosse team in a Route 11 rivalry battle, under the lights, at North Country Field on Wednesday.

Mark Mahoney tallied two goals and assisted on two others, while Judge Murphy added one of each and Joe Scarfi and Stew Hutchinson also scored for the Scarlet and Brown. Paddy Condon went 16-for-23 in the faceoff circle and picked up nine ground balls, while Mahoney, Scarfi and Christian Warren each caused two turnovers.

Stew Hutchinson tallied his 16th of the season to open scoring, but a strong first quarter showed five straight goals from the Golden Knights to lead 5-1 after the first 15 minutes.

The Saints battled back, as two goals from Ben Hutchinson, one from Murphy and Scarfi's first of the season brought the Scarlet and Brown back within one with 8:47 to play in the first half.

Clarkson would score the next two to lead 8-5 at halftime.

The Golden Knights played solid defense and outscored the Saints 4-3 in the third quarter and 2-1 in the fourth to seal the win.

"Clarkson deserved to win the game," said head coach Mike Mahoney. "We have to bounce back quickly to get ready for our next opponent on Saturday."

Sebastian Geiger scored seven goals and added one assist to lead the Golden Knights, while Bryan Penney finished with three goals.

Saints' goaltender Michael Marinello made 10 saves, while Clarkson's Jacob Mattice made 16.

St. Lawrence outshot Clarkson 41-37 and picked up 37 ground balls to the Golden Knights' 24. Clarkson finished 1-for-5 on man-up opportunities.

With the loss, the Saints moved to 11-3 overall and 3-2 in conference play, while Clarkson improved to 10-3 and 2-3.

St. Lawrence will host RPI on Saturday, April 22 for senior day. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
