Baseball Falls 9-8 To Plattsburgh On Walk Off Sacrifice Fly

The Saints climbed all the way back with five runs in the last three innings, but the St. Lawrence University baseball team would fall 9-8 to a walk-off sacrifice fly at the hands of Plattsburgh State on Wednesday afternoon.

St. Lawrence fell to 8-14 with the loss, while the Cardinals improved to 10-14.

The Cardinals opened the game hot scoring six runs in the first two innings. In the bottom half of the first, Plattsburgh scored on a pair of groundouts to take the 2-0 lead. In the second, they doubled their lead with back-to-back singles that drove a run in apiece. The Cardinals would score on an error and a wild pitch to bring it to 6-0.

St. Lawrence would eventually respond in the top of the third cutting the deficit in half. Max Cloutier started the inning with a double and was singled home by Eoin Morrissey. Another single, followed by a Tynan Creagh double would make it 6-2 before Sean Desjardins scored on a groundout to bring the contest to 6-3.

Only one run was scored by either team until the top of the seventh where the Saints would keep the deficit to three with a Timothy Connor sacrifice fly.

The Scarlet and Brown tied the game in the top of the eighth at 7-7. The half-inning started with a Caleb Clark single and a Jimmy Liberatore double to put two runners in scoring position. Daniel Verrastro brought the first run home with a sacrifice fly. In the next at-bat, John Gannon hit a double to left center to make it 7-6. Creagh came up big again with two outs singling home Owen McClintock to tie the game.

Plattsburgh scored a run in the bottom of the eighth to regain the lead, but Clark tied it right back up in the top of the ninth on a fielder's choice.

The game would end in the bottom of the ninth as the Cardinals loaded the bases off an error, single, and an intentional walk. A sacrifice fly in the next at bat brought the winning run across home plate.

Sam Fosberg started the game for the Saints going one and a third innings. He was followed by Philip Centineo, who struck out one in two-thirds and Danny Collins, who went one and a third scoreless innings. James Morr, John Igoe, Christian Mingione, and Brendan Karadenes each pitched an inning after that before Joshua Polumbo pitched the final one and a third.

The Saints will be back in action on Friday when they host Rochester in game one of their series at 3:00 p.m. The two teams will then play a doubleheader on Saturday starting at noon.
