The Saints played were down 5-4 after five innings and knocked out the Yellow Jacket starter, but seven ruins in the next two innings led to the St. Lawrence University baseball team falling 12-5 to Rochester on Friday afternoon at Tom Fay Field.
St. Lawrence fell to 8-15 on the year and 3-10 in Liberty League play, while the Yellow Jackets improved to 20-11 overall.
Stephen Colangelo was great at the dish in the game going 3-for-4 with a run.
Both teams were able to get a run on the board early in unspectacular fashion. Rochester was able to bring a run in on a ground out, while
Timothy Connor brought a runner home with a sacrifice fly. The Yellow Jackets would take a 2-1 lead in the second with an RBI single.
The Yellow Jackets would extend their lead to 3-1 in the fourth with an RBI double down the left field line from their catcher J. Moses. St. Lawrence opened the bottom half of the inning with a double, hit by pitch, and a fielder's choice, which set
Sean Desjardins up for a bunt single that brought Connor home.
Another big double in the fifth put Rochester up 5-2 as Rende brought two runners home with his blast.
In the bottom half of the fifth,
John Donnellan worked a walk to start the half-inning and was advanced by a Colangelo single.
Tynan Creagh then laid down a bunt that was fielded and botched by the Rochester third baseman. The error allowed both runners to score while the first-year took second. The Saints were unable to strike further on the attack.
This was as close as the Scarlet and Brown would get as in the sixth, an RBI single extended the lead by one, then in the seventh, two home runs and a stolen base at home ballooned the lead to 12-4 for the Yellow Jackets.
The Saints would get one more run home in the eighth when a Desjardins hit by pitch turned into a run off a big Donnellan double over the head of the left fielder.
Brett Parker, who started the game, pitched four and a third innings on the hill for the Saints giving up two earned runs.
Brenden O'Neil pitched two and a third in relief giving up three earned and struck out one.
Christian Mingione and
John Igoe combined for the final two and a third innings allowing one hit combined and striking out a batter.
The two teams will complete the three-game series tomorrow afternoon at Tom Fay Field. Game one of the twin bill starts at noon.
