Goretti Sparks Game One Win; Saints Baseball Splits DH At Bard

The Saints offense exploded for 16 runs in a 16-6 game one win, but the St. Lawrence University baseball team was only able to churn out one run in a 3-1 loss in game two to Bard College to split the series on Sunday afternoon

St. Lawrence moved to 8-13 on the season with the split and 3-9 in the Liberty League. Bard saw their record move to 7-14 overall and 5-8 in league play.

Michael Goretti was lethal in game one going 3-for-3 with four RBI and three runs scored, he also had a run scored in game two. Caleb Clark was just as dangerous going 3-for-5 with four runs score to go with an RBI.

"We had a solid weekend against two tough opponents but couldn't get enough going in game 4," said head coach Kenny Collins "This was a great experience for us, testing our depth and ability to go on the road and win games. I'm proud of our effort and looking forward to seeing what we can do this week in another 4 games."

Game 1: St. Lawrence 16, Bard 6 (9 Innings)

The offense was churning from the get-go for the Saints, who scored four in the top half of the first. Tynan Creagh opened the game with a walk before stealing second and being moved to third. The first-year came around to score on a Timothy Connor sacrifice fly to get the Saints on the board.

Later in the inning with the bases loaded, Huck Haun reached on a throwing error that spiraled into three runs coming across the plate for St. Lawrence putting them up 4-0. Bard would hit a solo home run in the bottom half of the inning to cut into the early lead.

The Saints added to their lead in the top of the third when two runs came in off wild pitched to bring the score to 6-1. Then in the top of the fifth, Goretti hit a double to right to extend the lead to 7-1.

The Raptors made a charge of their own in the bottom of the fifth first scoring on an RBI-single, then making the score 7-5 with a three-run shot to left field.

St. Lawrence would respond with a crooked inning of their own in the sixth with five more runs. Creagh once again jumpstarted the offense, this time with a lead off double. Brinker would then reach safely on a sacrifice bunt, but the throw was botched allowing Creagh to come around the paths. Goretti remained hot with the bat with a two-RBI double down the left field line before scoring himself on a passed ball to bring the match to 12-5.

Connor, Clark, Goretti, and Max Cloutier would all bring in runs in the late innings as the Saints ran away with the game.

Jack Sylvia started on the hill for the Scarlet and Brown pitching five innings in the win. The senior allowed four earned on four hits and struck out five. Brenden O'Neil pitched an inning in relief, before Joshua Polumbo came in for the final three innings giving up just one run and striking out two in his save.

Game 2: St. Lawrence 1, Bard 3 (7 Innings)

Bard opened the scoring in game two with back-to-back doubles in the bottom of the first to get an early tun on the board. They were not done for the inning as they tacked on a run with a sacrifice fly and another double down the line.

In the next half inning, Huck Haun was able to single home Goretti, who reached on a hit by pitch to cut into the score.

The Saints were able to fend off the Bard offense the rest of the way, but were equally unable to string together offense themselves as the game would end at 3-1.

Brenden O'Neil got the start in game two and pitched four innings giving up two earned runs on four hits. Michael Watson pitched an inning of relief, and was followed by Danny Collins, and Brendan Karadenes, who combined to pitch the final inning.

The Saints will be back on the road for a non-conference matchup with SUNY Plattsburgh on Tuesday, April 18 before hosting Rochester for three games next weekend.
