Game Recap: Baseball |

Saints Baseball Drops 10-7, 5-2 Games At RPI

Caleb Clark and Jackson Brinker were both able to drive in two runs, but the St. Lawrence University baseball team lost both games of their doubleheader 10-7, 5-2 against RPI in Troy, N.Y. on Saturday.

The Saints fell to 7-12 on the year and 2-8 in Liberty League play, while RPI improved to 18-9-1 and 5-3 in conference play.

Clark went 4-for-5 in game one with two RBI and a run scored, while Brinker went 1-for-2 with a solo homer, and three walks. The sophomore went 3-for-6 in total on the day with a run scored and two RBI. Timothy Connor was 2-for 3 in game one with three runs.

Game 1: St. Lawrence 7, RPI 10 (9 Innings)

The Scarlet and Brown offense got off to a good start in the top half of the first earning two hits, but the inning would come to pass without any runs.

The Engineers on the other hand jumped on the Saints in the bottom half of the inning. A single and a fielding error led to a three-RBI home run for RPI's Marintchev to put the team up 3-0 early.

St. Lawrence's Brinker would hit a long-ball of his own in the second inning as the sophomore sent a fastball over the wall in left-center to cut the deficit to 3-1. Later, in the top of the third, the Saints would tie the game when a Brett Federico ground-rule double would lead to a run off of a wild pitch. Clark would then double home Connor to tie the game.

The contest was played scoreless for the next few innings until the sixth where the Saints regained the lead. With two outs, a John Donnellan walk loaded the base paths for Tynan Creagh, who also forced a walk to bring Clark around to score.

RPI got back on the board in the next half-inning with a two-run home run, but the game was leveled at 5-5 with another RBI double from Clark in the seventh.

The seesaw affair swung to RPI in the seventh when the Engineers took a one run lead off a single. Then in the bottom of the eighth, RPI hung a crooked number with four runs. Another solo home run followed by an RBI-single, and a two-RBI home run put the Engineers up 10-5.

The Saints were able to get two of the runs back in the ninth as Brinker walked home a run and Donnellan was hit by a pitch for another, but they could not muster enough of a comeback.

Brett Parker started on the bump for the Saints going six and a third innings giving up five earned runs on five hits and struck out one batter. Sam Fosberg pitched one and a third innings giving up three earned and a strikeout. Brendan Karadenes came in for the last third of an inning giving up a run and a hit.

Game 2: St. Lawrence 2, RPI 5 (7 Innings)

Game two was all RPI for the first two innings as they took a 4-0 lead.

In the first, a single, stolen base, and a walk set up the plate for an RBI-single to break the scoring open. The Engineers were hit by a pitch to start the inning, and would come around to score on a triple. Another hit by pitch led to a double steal brining in a third run. RPI would cap it off with a single to left field to claim the 4-0 lead.

The Saints were able to get a little offense going in the third getting runners on the corners with two outs, but the threat was neutralized.

The game would roll into the fifth where Aidan Safar doubled home the Engineers' fifth run.

In the top of the seventh, the Scarlet and Brown offense started to come to life as Michael Goretti delivered a lead off single. A fielder's choice and error would advance the fifth-year to third where he was brought in by a Donnellan double to the left field wall. Brinker would bring Huck Haun home with two down in the inning with a single to bring the score to 5-2 but RPI would make a pitching change and end the game with a strikeout.

Michael Hutchins was on the mound for game two pitching all six innings. Hutchins gave up five runs on five hits and fanned a career-high eight batters along the way.

The Scarlet and Brown will be back in action tomorrow when the team travels to Annandale-on-Hudson, N.Y. to take on Bard in a doubleheader starting at 12:00 noon.
