The Saints and Tigers produced a total of 49 runs in a windy Tuesday twin bill, but the St. Lawrence University baseball team would be on the wrong end of 20-11, and 11-7 losses to the RIT Tigers in Rochester on Tuesday afternoon.
The Saints fell to 7-10 on the year and 2-6 in Liberty League play, while RIT improved to 11-8 and 5-2 in conference play.
Michael Goretti had a great day from the plate going 5-for-10 with three RBI and two runs scored. Despite going just 1-for-5 on the day,
Timothy Connor led the way with four RBI and he also scored a run. First-year
Tynan Creagh was great all around for St. Lawrence going 5-for-8 with two runs and two RBI.
Game 1: St. Lawrence 11, RIT 20 (7 Innings)
The Scarlet and Brown opened game one the same way they left their game on Sunday, red-hot offensively.
Brett Federico delivered a triple to open the game and was quickly brought home by a Connor sacrifice fly. With two outs away, RIT gave up a walk, an RBI double to
Caleb Clark, and an RBI single to
Jackson Brinker in three straight at-bats to put the Saints up 3-0. The big inning was capped off by Creagh, who drove in two more runs with a single to right field.
The Tigers were more than ready to match the offensive output scoring five of their own in the bottom half of the first. RIT would single home their first run. Then, with two outs away, a hit by pitch and back-to-to-back doubles brought four more runs to the plate to tie the game at 5-5.
After another lead off triple, this time from Goretti, Connor would once again deliver a sacrifice fly to take the 6-5 lead.
RIT would tie the game in the bottom of the third with a solo home run to right center. But it was the bottom of the fourth that the Tigers broke the game open. With one out and the base paths full, an error would bring home the first run. Then, in three straight at-bats, RIT would score a two-RBI single, a three-run home run, and a solo home run to take a 13-6 lead.
The Tigers would further put the game away in the bottom of the fifth when RIT had the bases loaded once again. The Tiger hitter hit a long ball to the outfield wall where a St. Lawrence player would go down after colliding with the wall. RIT would not stop running as they cleared the bases, and the batter came all the way home for a home run.
St. Lawrence would mount a small comeback in the next half-inning scoring five more runs. A lead off double and an error set the plate for Goretti, who singled home a runner. RIT would walk the next batter and hit the one after that to advance a second run home with the bases loaded. Clark singled to right field to keep the turnstiles rolling before Brinker was also hit by a pitch to bring Connor around.
Sean Desjardins brought in the fifth run with a fielder's choice to bring the score to 17-11.
RIT scored their last three runs in the bottom of the sixth with a two-RBI double and an RBI single which would put the game away for good.
Brenden O'Neil started the game for the Saints and struck out three batter sin three innings.
Joshua Polumbo, and
JJ Humenay would pitch an inning each, while
James Morr, and
John Igoe split the last inning.
Game 2: St. Lawrence 7, RIT 11 (7 Innings)
Game two started with much less dramatics but would see each team score a run. In the top half of the first, Federico this time delivered a lead off double to start the attack. He would advance to third on a ground out before a Connor groundout brought him around to score.
In the bottom half, the Saints started with back-to-back putouts, but three straight singles would bring a run home tying the game at 1-1.
The contest rolled along into the bottom of the fourth where RIT would take the lead. The Tigers went, walk, single, single to score their first run, before another walk loaded the bases. RIT would hit back-to-back sacrifice flies to extend the lead to 4-1.
They would have the bases full again in the fifth, where a single and a double would bring three more runs in. St, Lawrence would get one back in the fifth with an RBI double from Goretti that scored
Stephen Colangelo to make it 8-2. The score was moved to 10-2 in the sixth, when RIT hit a two-run double to extend their lead.
After the Tigers made it 11-2, the Saints once again attempted to mount a large comeback in the top of the ninth. Clark started the inning with a single, and was followed by Creagh, and
Eoin Morrissey, who also provided singles. Morrissey's would bring in two runs to jumpstart the attack. The Scarlet and Brown would smack four more singles in the next four at-bats to bring the score to 11-6 with the bases loaded and one out. A pitching change led to a fielder's choice and a strikeout too end the game at 11-7.
Michael Watson started on the hill in game two pitching three innings, giving up one run on four hits.
Christian Mingione, and
Philip Centineo split the fourth and fifth innings, while
Sam Fosberg, Brenan Karadenes, and
Jared Brenner would each pitch an inning to end the game.
St. Lawrence will be back in action this weekend with two more road doubleheaders. First, on Saturday starting at 1:00 p.m. the Saints will travel to Troy, N.Y. to take on RPI, then on Sunday, the team will head to Annandale-on-Hudson, N.Y. for a twin bill against Bard starting at Noon.
