The No. 22 St. Lawrence University women's lacrosse team scored nine goals in the second half, including six in the fourth quarter, but an early lead lifted the No. 13 Ithaca Bombers to a 14-12 win in Liberty League action on Friday afternoon in Ithaca, N.Y.
Rachel Burke and
Neve Ley each tallied three goals for the Saints, while
Jacqui Cloutier scored two.
Morgan Arakelian finished with a goal and an assist, while
Bella Hillman,
Charlotte Powell and
Ellie Camp also scored for the Scarlet and Brown.
Haley Sundstrom finished with five ground balls and two caused turnovers, while Powell and
Dana Fernandez each won three draws.
The Bombers took a strong lead from the start, outscoring the Saints 6-2 in the first quarter. Ithaca continued a five-goal run into the second frame and Burke capped the first half scoring, but the Bombers held on to an 8-3 lead at the break.
Sydney Phillips recorded back-to-back tallies to start the third, but Cloutier and Arakelian scored 26 seconds apart for the Saints to bring the game back within five. The Bombers recorded two more and Burke scored her second of the game, as Ithaca led 12-6 with one quarter remaining.
The Saints fired on all cylinders in the fourth quarter, outscoring Ithaca 6-2, but an early lead and two goals in the fourth gave the Bombers the final edge for the win.
"We got off to a bit of a slow start today," said head coach
Chelsea Martin. "But they clicked in the second half and really worked together to cut the lead to two goals against a strong Ithaca team."
Phillips led the Bombers with four goals, while Chloe Nordyke finished with three. Kaitlyn Russell finished with three ground balls and two caused turnovers, while Caroline Wise won 18 draws.
Raelynn Bovenzi finished with eight saves for the Saints, while Lexi Held made 11 saves for Ithaca.
The Bombers outshot the Saints 36-30, but the Saints held a 23-22 edge in shots on goal. The hosts also won 19 draws to the Saints' nine, while the Scarlet and Brown picked up 18 ground balls to Ithaca's 14.
St. Lawrence fell to 3-3 overall and 1-1 in league play, while Ithaca improved to 6-2 and 3-0.
The Saints will take on No. 5 William Smith in Geneva, N.Y., tomorrow at 2 p.m.
