Susan Hartgers scored, and
Raelynn Bovenzi made a career-best 15 saves for the Saints, but a strong first half powered the No. 5 William Smith Herons to a 15-3 win over the No. 22 St. Lawrence University women's lacrosse team on Saturday afternoon in Geneva, N.Y.
Kate Wilson picked up three ground balls and caused two turnovers for the Scarlet and Brown, while
Dana Fernandez won two draws.
The Herons claimed a 3-0 lead after the first quarter of play, outshooting the Saints 12-2 overall, including 8-1 in shots on goal.
William Smith continued to hold the Saints scoreless in the first half, adding another four goals to lead 7-0 at the break.
Cloutier and Powell scored the pair of goals for the Scarlet and Brown in the third, but the Herons continued to dominate, scoring another four to lead 11-2 with one quarter remaining.
Hartgers added one more goal for the Saints in the fourth, but the Herons would finish with a 15-3 win to remain undefeated on the season and in Liberty League play.
Katherine Murray led the Herons with four goals, while four other members of the William Smith squad scored two each. Molly Davis picked up four ground balls, won five draws and caused three turnovers.
Bovenzi started in goal for the Saints and made a season and career-high 15 saves. She was relieved by
Courtney Lynn, who finished with two. Maura Smeader finished with six saves for William Smith.
William Smith outshot the Saints 40-13, including 32-9 in shots on goal. The Heron's also won 15 draws to St. Lawrence's seven.
The Saints fell to 3-4 on the season and 1-2 in conference play, while the Herons improved to 7-0 and 2-0, respectively.
St. Lawrence will return home to take on Bard on Saturday, April 1 and Trinity on Sunday, April 2.
