The St. Lawrence University softball team run-ruled Keuka in five innings to earn their first win of the season and fell to the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in nine innings in game two on their final day of their spring break trip in Clermont, Florida on Friday afternoon.
10 Saints recorded at least one hit and
Olivia Caporale,
Tori Rotundo,
Meredith Rose,
Vivian Johnson, and
Cora Ferguson each had multiple RBI days.
St. Lawrence 13, Keuka 2 6 (5 inn.)
Keuka scored in the top of the first inning to take the early lead, but the Saints got it back and then some in the bottom of the inning. Rotundo worked a walk and scored off a Rose double. Caporale switched places with Rose when she doubled to right center.
Margo Hopper made it runners on the corner with a single up the middle. Ferguson loaded the bases off an infield error. Johnson and
Zola Braswell each earned RBI to make it 4-1.
The Saints scored seven more in the bottom of the third. Ferguson doubled, Caporale had two singles, and Braswell, Camillieri, and VanGee each had singles in the inning. Rose and Johnson each hit sacrifice flies.
Brooke Larrabee and Johnson scored in the fourth to make it 13-1 off RBI from VanGee and Rotundo. Keuka got one back in the fifth, and the game was called after five.
Layne Fritz got the win, pitching one and a third, giving up zero earned runs.
Jacee Casebolt relieved for one and a third, striking out two, and Caporale pitched the final two and a third with no earned runs.
St. Lawrence 1, University of Wisconsin-Whitewater 2 (9 inn.)
In the final game of the Spring Trip, Ferguson opened the game up with a solo home run down the left field line to lead off the second inning. The Warhawks scored on a wild pitch to even the game in the third.
Neither teams would find the advantage and the game went to extra innings. In the bottom of the eighth with a runner on third, Johnson made a diving stop to prevent the ball from going up the middle and made the plate at first in time to send the game to the ninth. The game ended with a Warhawk RBI single in the ninth.
Caporale pitched two and a third, giving up just one run, and Fritz pitched six innings with zero earned runs, striking out two.
"We had a lot of learning moments," said head coach
Rosie Phillips, "and this week tested us mentally and physically, but this team battled hard against some very good teams. The scoreboard doesn't reflect the fight put up this week. We had many one-run games that could have gone in either direction. This team showed up ready to compete and our focus is preparing for Liberty Leagues. We leave Florida a better team than when we arrived and I'm looking forward to seeing how that helps us on and off the field in conference play."
The Saints finish the Florida trip 1-11, while Keuka fell to 0-9 and Whitewater is 8-2 on the year. St. Lawrence returns to the diamond on April 1st with a twin bill at Oneonta.
