Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Fernandez Scores Overtime Winner; No. 22 Saints Come-From-Behind to Top Stevenson

Dana Fernandez scored three minutes and 14 seconds into overtime to lift the No. 22 St. Lawrence University women's lacrosse team to a come-from-behind 11-10 win over Stevenson University on Tuesday night in Owing Mills, Maryland.

Fernandez scored her sixth of the season and the first of the night against the Mustangs, scoring the goal that counted the most. She also recorded four draw control wins, two ground balls and one caused turnover. Jacqui Cloutier led the Saints with three goals and one assist, while Bella Hillman, Charlotte Powell and Neve Ley all scored twice and Ellie Camp scored once.

Charlotte Powell led the Saints with five draw control wins, while Kelsey O'Brien picked up four ground balls and seven Saints each caused one turnover.

The Saints fell behind to start, as the Mustangs scored three goals in the first and four goals in the second to build a 7-0 lead at halftime.

A third-quarter surge and six goals from the Scarlet and Brown, brought them back within two with one quarter to go.

The Mustangs' Kellyann Coccia scored first to start the fourth, but the Saints scored the next four, including the game-tying goal on a free-position shot from Cloutier.

Fernandez notched an unassisted tally for the game winner.

"The team showed tenacity and resiliency in the second half today," said head coach Chelsea Martin. "Our offense started to click and our midfield had a significant impact on the draw. Overall, a great comeback and team win and our defense made adjustments at halftime and held them to only three goals."

Kara Yarusso, Isabelle Vanemburgh and Marisa Masswimini each scored twice for Stevenson.

Raelynn Bovenzi made six saves for St. Lawrence, while Sophie Shucosky made 12 for the Mustangs.

The Saints outshot the Mustangs 32-21 and finished with a 16-9 advantage in draw controls, but Stevenson picked up two more ground balls.

St. Lawrence improved to 3-2 on the season, while Stevenson fell to 2-6.

The Saints will return to Liberty League play this weekend, as they travel to Ithaca to face the Bombers on Friday, March 24 at 4 p.m.
