Box Score 2 Brett Federico drove in the lone run in a 1-0 game one win, while
Daniel Verrastro drove in three runs to help power the St. Lawrence University baseball team to a 13-9 win in game two to earn a doubleheader sweep over Old Westbury on Sunday afternoon in Davenport, Florida.
St. Lawrence improved to 2-1 on the year, while Old Westbury fell to 5-4 on their season.
"We fought well today against a really tough opponent," said head coach
Kenny Collins They kept us off balance in the first game with a good outing from their starting pitcher, but we were able to get one across the plate and our pitching staff shut it down. Game two was completely different, and I'm happy with our ability to win both a low-scoring and high-scoring game. We will need to keep relying on our entire roster for these wins."
Michael Hutchins earned the win in game one with
Michael Watson earning a save after
Sam Fosberg's hold on the mound.
Â
Sean Desjardins,
John Donnellan, and
Jackson Brinker each provided three RBI in game two along with Verrastro's three. First-year
Joshua Polumbo earned his first win in Scarlet and Brown pitching two and two-thirds innings with no hits and two strikeouts.
Game 1: St. Lawrence 1, Old Westbury 0
The Panthers threatened early in the game with two hits from their first two batters. However, Donnellan caught Jamal Ritter stealing before Hutchins worked out of the inning with back-to-back fly outs.
Â
St. Lawrence's offense struggled as their first hit wouldn't come until the bottom of the second when Brinker singled for his first hit of the campaign. Hutchins kept rolling through the top of the third and into the bottom where the only run of the game would be scored.
Â
First-year
Tynan Creagh started the bottom half of the third with a hard-hit ball that was coughed up by the first baseman for an error. The rookie would steal second with Federico at the dish. The junior outfielder would slap a single to right field to score Creagh and proceeded to advance to second on the throw. The Saints offense would stop there as the Panthers closed the inning.
Â
Hutchins would find trouble again in the four as he hit a batter and walked the next with one out away in the inning. The sophomore hurler forced a pop up for the second out but allowed the runners to advance to second and third on the next pitch with a wild pitch before walking Charlie Eise. Hutchins came up big with a ground out to end the threat.
Â
The starter would be relieved in the top of the sixth by Fosberg, who came in after Westbury smacked a double and a single to start the inning. The reliever struck out Jaime Barrio before forcing a 6-4-3 double play to neutralize the attack.
Â
Fosberg would earn the hold as with one out and a runner on first and second, the Saints brought in Watson. Watson forced a fielder's choice force out at third before striking out the final batter to earn the save.
Â
Game 2: St. Lawrence 13, Old Westbury 9
It didn't take as long to get the first runs in game two as the Saints took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the second when Desjardins smacked a single and stole second base shortly thereafter. Verrastro would single himself aboard to drive in his teammate. Next up, Donnellan hit himself a double to earn an RBI as well.
Â
The Panthers would cut the lead in half scoring off a wild pitch in the bottom half of the inning.
Â
Verrastro stayed hot in the third as
Caleb Clark and
Timothy Connor singled their way aboard and Desjardins walked to load the paths for the outfielder. Verrastro hammered a double to left center field to extend the lead to 4-1 for St. Lawrence.
Â
The lead was short lived as Old Westbury delivered a crooked inning in the bottom of the third. A sacrifice fly and a wild pitch brought the game to 4-3, then back-to-back bases loaded walks gave the Panthers the 5-4 lead.
Â
The lead would stick until the top of the fifth when
Jimmy Liberatore scored on a bases loaded double play ball to tie the game at 5-5.
Â
Old Westbury again answered in the bottom of the fifth taking the lead with a bases loaded balk. The Panthers would make it a 9-5 game with a bases jammed walk and a two-RBI single later in the inning.
Â
The see-saw battle tilted back to the Scarlet and Brown, who delivered a six -run inning in the top of the sixth. The onslaught started with a Federico triple, and a trip home as they attempted to throw out Clark, who successfully stole second. Back-to-back walks loaded the bases leading to a wild pitch which scored Clark.
Â
Later in the inning, Donnellan would take a hit by pitch forcing home another run. St. Lawrence would pinch hit Brinker with two outs and he delivered a two-RBI single to regain the lead at 10-9. Federico finished the inning he started with an RBI-single to extend it to 11-9.
Â
In the top of the seventh, the lead was extended to 13-9 as Desjardins drove home Clark and Liberatore, who singles aboard before being advanced on a wild pitch. Polumbo would close the rest of the game to earn the win. Â
Next up:
The Scarlet and Brown will head back to Northeast Regional Park 4 tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. for a twin bill against Hamilton College. Â Â
