Powell Records 100th Career Point; No. 19 Saints Outlast Rochester, 14-11

Charlotte Powell tallied four goals and assisted on three others, recording her 100th career point, to lead the No. 19 St. Lawrence University women's lacrosse team to a 14-11 win over the University of Rochester in Liberty League play on Saturday afternoon at North Country Field.

Powell also added two draw control wins, while Morgan Arakelian, Dana Fernandez, Jacqui Cloutier and Neve Ley all scored twice for the Scarlet and Brown. Rachel Burke and Ellie Camp also scored, while Cloutier and Kelsey O'Brien each finished with four ground balls. Cloutier also led the Saints with three caused turnovers, while O'Brien had two.

The Saints got out to an explosive start, shutting out the Yellowjackets 5-0 after the first 15 minutes of play, including back-to-back goals from Powell at the start.

The teams traded goals in the second, but the Saints' strong lead gave them an 8-2 advantage at halftime.

The Yellowjackets came out of the break stinging, scoring three goals in the first five minutes of the third quarter to bring the game within four. The Saints scored two more off the sticks of Powell and Camp to increase the lead back to a six-goal spread (11-5), but Rochester went on a 6-1 run to close the third and start the fourth quarter, making it 12-11.

With the majority of the fourth quarter left to go, the Saints defense locked down and goals from Fernandez and Cloutier helped the Saints hang on for their first conference win of the season.

"It was a great team win and effort to secure a win in our first conference game," said head coach Chelsea Martin. "The team showed resiliency and grit in the second half. Our defense has continued to make some solid stops for us, and our offense demonstrated some adaptability and worked together well today."
 

 
Grace Crochiere and Grace Giannettino each scored three goals for the Yellowjackets, while Crochiere and Emma Little each won seven draw controls.
 
Raelynn Bovenzi made eight saves between the pipes for the Scarlet and Brown, while Ava Saffren started the game for Rochester and made three and Emily Geiss played the second half and made five stops.
 
The Saints outshot Rochester 27-23, including 22-19 in shots on goal, the hosts also picked up 20 ground balls to Rochester's 13, but the Yellowjackets controlled the majority of the draws going 19-9.
 
St. Lawrence improved to 2-2 and 1-0 in conference action, while Rochester fell to 3-3 and 0-2.
 
The Saints will hit the road for spring break and travel to Stevenson for a 7 p.m. matchup on March 21.
